The Ohio swimming and diving team opened the 2017-18 regular season with a 202-96 victory over in-state rival Youngstown State on Saturday (Oct. 21) at the Penguins’ home pool, the Beeghly Natatorium.
The meet kicked off with the 200-yard medley relay, with the squad of junior Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.), sophomore Emilia Lahtinen (Ylojarvi, Finland), freshman Samantha Glass (Villa Hills, Ky.) and sophomore Emily Zimcosky (Smock, Pa.) finishing in first-place with a final time of 1:47.34.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, freshman Hannah Schlegel (Birdsboro, Pa.) finished first with a time of 10:17.58 followed by freshman Katherine Garrity (Eagan, Minn.) in second place at 10:45.58.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Zimcosky finished in first place with a time of 1:54.07 and junior Ana Henderson(Danville, Calif.) just behind her in second place with a 1:55.98 finish.
Senior Caroline Raley (Mobile, Ala.) finished the 100-yard backstroke in first at 59.24 and Glass in second at 59.42.
Lahtinen won the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:07.18 time.
Sophomore Annie Gosselin (Naperville, Ill.), junior Emily Davis (Lexington, Ky.) and senior Elena Patz(Waunakee, Wis.) stole first through third place in the 200-yard butterfly by finishing in 2:07.79, 2:09.06 and 2:10.94, respectively.
In the 50-yard freestyle, the Bobcats finished in first and second place with Zimcosky finishing at 24.67 and junior Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.) at 24.93.
The 100-yard freestyle ended with Van Lanen in first place with a 51.89 time.
Glass finished the 200-yard backstroke first for the Bobcats with a 2:07.14 time. Gosselin was next in at second place and in 2:09.25.
In the 11th event of the afternoon, the Bobcats won first place with Hornstra in the lead at 2:22.76.
In the 500-yard freestyle, the Bobcats prevailed again with Henderson in the lead and finishing in 5:07.12.
Van Lanen picked up a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.07.
In the 200-yard IM Gosselin placed second with a final time of 2:10.91.
The Bobcats secured the win in the last event of the afternoon by finishing first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with the team of Zimcosky, junior Lexie White (Waxhaw, N.C.), Schlegel and Van Lanen recording a time of 3:36.46.
For the divers, Nicole Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio) took second place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 248.47.
In the three-meter dive, Hughes picked up another second-place finish with a final score of 246.44.
UP NEXT
The Bobcats are on the road again as they travel to Muncie, Ind. to compete against Mid-American Conference foe, Ball State (Oct. 28). The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m. E.T.

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team was in action on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Natatorium against Ohio. Senior divers McKenzie Stelter (one-meter) and Bethany Glick (three-meter) led the way by sweeping the diving events. Freshman Aida Jurinovics won the 200 IM for the Penguins.
Stelter scored a 262.11 to win the one-meter event by 13.64 points over Ohio’s Nicole Hughes. Glick won the three-meter dive with a score of 237.68 and was third with a score of 233.02 in the one-meter.
Jurinovics picked up here first career event win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.05.
Leading the swimmers was Tiphaine Saint-Gilles who was second in the 100-yard breaststroke swimming a time of 1:07.55. She was also second in the 200-yard breast with a time of 2:24.31. Natalie Laurence was third in the 200 breast with a time of 2:33.75.
In the 100-yard freestyle, YSU finished second and third. Placing second was Haley Fisher with a time of 54.31 seconds while Kolburn Jonsdottir placed third with a time 56.05 seconds.
In the 200-yard medley relay, YSU posted a time of 1:50.20. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Penguins clocked a 3:38.20.
Taylor Bishop was third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:54.60. She also placed third in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.01.
Senior Viktoria Orosz was third in the 100-yard backstroke swimming a time of 2:12.03.
Freshman Jamie Leming was third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.82. Fisher was third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.35 seconds.
Ohio won the dual by a score of 202-96.
The Penguins are next in action next Saturday at Oakland.
