Ohio Finishes MAC Dual Season Undefeated After Wins Over Toledo and Buffalo

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ohio swimming and diving team (6-2, 4-0 MAC) returned to action Friday evening (Jan. 20), picking up two Mid-American Conference victories against Toledo (3-4, 1-3 MAC) and Buffalo (1-3, 1-2 MAC) in a tri-meet hosted by Toledo. Ohio defeated the Rockets, 219-81 and defeated Buffalo, 166-111.

With the two victories, the Bobcats finished the MAC dual season with a perfect 4-0 record.

Ohio opened the night in the 200-yard medley relay, with the Bobcats’ ‘A’ team of freshman Allison Schrank (Blaine, Minn.), junior Ami Hornyak (Debrecen, Hungary), junior Gabrielle Brust (Granville, Ohio) and junior Caroline Dunigan (Carmel, Ind.) finishing second with a time of 1:43.62.

Next in the 1,000-yard freestyle, the Bobcats took the top three spots, with freshman Lauren Hartel (Arlington, Va.) placing first in 10:10.95, junior Morgan Croaning (Carmel, Ind.) in second in 10:25.65 and sophomore Gabrielle McKee (Gilbertsville, Pa.) in third with a time of 10:28.44.

Senior McKenzie Grau (Mason, Ohio) picked up a second-place finish in the 200 free, touching in with a time of 1:51.74. Senior Emma Fortman (Madeira, Ohio) finished third in 1:52.50, while freshman Anna McGrath placed fourth in 1:52.52. Then in the 100-yard backstroke, Schrank placed third with a time of 57.04, while junior Riley Bunstine (Alexandria, Ohio) finished fourth in 57.20.

Hornyak returned to continue her dominance in the breaststroke this season, placing first in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching in with a time of 1:02.82. Freshman Casadie DiBetta (St. Clairsville, Ohio) placed second in 1:03.89, while sophomore Julia Strine (Shippensburg, Pa.) finished third in 1:04.46.

In the 200 fly, the Bobcats took the top two spots with Brust placing first in 2:01.22, followed by senior Madeline Marks (Bentonville, Ark.) placing second in 2:03.03. Grau and Dunigan picked up a second and third place finish in the 50 free, with Grau finishing second in 23.62, followed by Dunigan in 23.94.

Fortman earned a fourth-place finish in the 100 free, finishing the race in 51.94, while junior Mollie Brackett (Appleton, Wis.) finished fifth in 52.01.

In the 200 back, Bunstine finished third in 2:02.41, while graduate student Athena Aravantinou (North Bethesda, Md.) placed fourth with a time of 2:03.19. Hornyak earned another first-place victory in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:17.03. DiBetta finished second (2:18.24) and freshman Emily Ellsworth (2:18.27) in third.

The Bobcats took the top-three spots in the 500 free, with Hartel finishing first in 4:56.55, McGrath in second (5:03.78) and McKee in third (5:04.78). Meanwhile, Brust placed first in the 100 fly, finishing in 55.07.

The Bobcats took the top three spots in the 200-yard IM, with Hornyak finishing first with a time of 2:04.48. Ellsworth placed second in 2:05.30, followed by Grau in third (2:05.52).

In the final swimming event of the evening, the Bobcats competed in the 200 free relay, with the ‘A’ team consisting of Dunigan, Fortman, Grau and junior Meg Voigt (Bryan, Ohio) placed second with a time of 1:35.14.

In diving, senior Sienna Breton (Cheshire, Conn.) placed second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 248.78, while sophomore Grace Matocha (Magnolia, Texas) finished fourth with a score of 240.80. In the 3-meter event, sophomore Sophie Cooper (Milford, Ohio) finished fifth with a score of 228.60.

Up next, the Bobcats head back to Athens tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 21, to take on Denison on Senior Day. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m., with Senior Day activities set to start at 1:45 p.m. inside the Ohio University Aquatic Center.

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women’s swimming and diving team (1-3, 1-2 MAC) defeated the Toledo Rockets (3-4, 1-3 MAC) by a score of 187-88 and fell to the Ohio Bobcats (6-2, 4-0 MAC) by a score of 150-111 on Friday night.

The team of Mia NaccarellaKatie PollockNicole Aguilar, and Toni Naccarella finished first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.42.

Sawyer Bosley earned a victory in the 200 freestyle in 1:50.58, and the Bulls went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke, as Mia Naccarella finished first with a time of 55.76-seconds, and Abbey Malmstrom took second in 56.48-seconds.

Mia Naccarella also took first in the 200 backstroke in 2:00.95, with Malmstrom finishing second in 2:01.24.

Toni Naccarella won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle with times of 23.03-seconds and 50.11-seconds, respectively. Bosley took second in the 100 freestyle in 51.75-seconds.

Clarice Fisher finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.46-seconds, and the Bulls capped off the meet with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Mia NaccarellaSawyer Bosley, Ellie Duley, and Toni Naccarella finished first in 1:33.64.

The Bulls continue their weekend road trip on Saturday, Jan. 21 as the team travels to Saline, Michigan to take on Eastern Michigan.

TOLEDO, Ohio – Junior Madison Giglio won both diving events, but it wasn’t enough for the Rockets as the Toledo women’s swimming & diving team fell to Mid-American Conference opponents Buffalo and Ohio Friday night. The Rockets were defeated 88-187 to the Bulls and 81-219 to the Bobcats.

Seniors Hannah BeaversAshley LeFever, and Caroline Wallenborg were honored prior to the start of the meet during the team’s Senior Day ceremony.

Toledo dominated the diving boards with junior Madison Giglio winning the one-meter with a PR mark of 275.10, and the three-meter with a score of 308.70.
Junior Ryli Harden scored two PR marks, a 244.80 on the one-meter and 260.78 on the three-meter. Freshman Annie Bartlett also scored two PRs, a 237.15 on the one-meter and 252.30 on the three-meter.

In the lanes, four Rockets had personal-best finishes in their respective events. Freshman Paula Pavillard-Salvador set a PR of 1:00.22 in the 100 backstroke to finish seventh. Sophomore Lindsey Creek beat her previous PR in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:12.21 and finished 10th. Lefever finished sixth in the 50 free with a PR time of 24.40. Sophomore Caitlin Heinze recorded a PR time of 1:02.88 and finished 10th in the 100 butterfly.

Toledo will wrap up the regular season with Miami next Saturday, Jan. 28 in Oxford, Ohio. The Rockets and RedHawks will be in the pool at 3:00 p.m.
