MORGANTON, W.Va. (February 13, 2021) – Mount St. Mary’s freshman Jason O’Donnell scored eight times on nine shots, as the Mountaineers improved to 2-2 on the season with a 17-10 over Washington & Jefferson Saturday.

O’Donnell almost doubled his scoring total on the year, climbing from nine to 17. The eight goals overthrew his previous high of five. The Quebec standout added three steals on defense.

All 10 of the Mount’s athletes contributed goals or assists in the victory. Following O’Donnell’s efforts, Jason Fitch earned a new career best with four goals, and Matthew Schwanke tallied his first collegiate goal during the game. In goal, Joseph Maxson denied 58 percent of the shots fired his way for a total of 14 saves. The Fort Lauderdale freshman also posted a trio of assists and a pair of steals.

Like O’Donnell’s individual accomplishment, the 17 goals scored nearly double the entire offensive output on the season. Over the past three games, the Mount had scored 20 goals total. Quick thinking play sparked the effort as eight goals came on counter attacks.

After conceding the first goal to the Presidents, the Mount responded with four unanswered in the first quarter. O’Donnell was responsible for three, with Fitch adding the fourth. Across the next two quarters, the teams played even, with the Mount inching their lead up one goal. The game was decided in the fourth as the Mountaineers tacked on five goals to the Presidents two.

A fast turnaround awaits Mount St. Mary’s with a 10 a.m. start time against McKendree Sunday morning.

Don’t know much about water polo but anytime you can shoot 8 of 9 I think you’re pretty much a stud
