Oakland Sweeps Wayne State On Senior Day

ROCHESTER, Mich. –The Oakland men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated in-state foe Wayne State on Saturday from the Oakland Aquatic Center as the men ousted the Warriors, 137-104, and the women came out on top, 142-76 as the Golden Grizzlies celebrated senior day.

To open up the meet, the women’s team of Susan LaGrand, Sydney McDowekk, Mia Keranen and Ronya Riihinen placed first in the 200 medley relay, touching the wall in 1:45.16. On the men’s team of Marko Khotynetskyi, Ryan Geheb, Mack Flowers and Christian Bart swam to a first place finish in the time of 1:29.78.

In both the men’s and women’s 1000 free, the Golden Grizzlies took the top three spots. Emily Aycock (10:31.81), Sonya Zubenko (10:49.86) and Jillian Rice (10:51.60) led the women, while Ben Davis (9:38.62), Ian Allen (9:51.76) and Ben Rojewski (10:00.72) placed in the top three on the men’s side respectively.

Sohvi Nenonen took the top spot in the 200 free (1:56.36) while Flowers led the Black and Gold on the men’s side, placing first in 1:40.66.

The Golden Grizzlies recorded top three finishes on both the men’s and women’s side in the 100 breaststroke. Taylor Bailey (1:04.71), Emily Shores (1:05.18), Kiera Brough (1:07.26) went one through three, while senior Ryan Geheb (57.46), Javi Quinones (57.54) and senior Tarek Aboelthana (57.89) rounded out the top performers on the men’s side.

The Golden Grizzlies will take on Cleveland State Friday, Feb 19 at 4 p.m. at the Oakland Aquatic Center.

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
Redshirt Junior Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany) placed second in the 100 back (51.21).

Sophomore Hans Anderson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) finished fourth in the 100 breast (59.20).

Freshman Michael Wolsek (Trenton, Mich.) came in second in the 200 fly (1:54.95).  Finishing third was freshman Alex Capizzo (1:55.21) and in fourth was sophomore Matt Vassilakos (2:01.38).

Sophomore Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia) finished second in the 50 free (20.75).  Following in third was senior Jack Rogers (21.08) and coming in fourth was junior Stewart Nowinski (Macomb, Mich. / L’anse Creuse North).

Freshman Brody Jamieson (Farmington, Mich. / Farmington) placed third in the 100 free (46.37).

Senior Tristan Fraley (St. Clair, Mich.) finished second in the 200 back (2:03.04) and sophomore Casey Dolen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) came in third (2:07.13).

Graduate student Hussain Alzaid (Kuwait City, Kuwait) finished the 200 breast in second place (2:12.29) and freshman Marko Vucelic (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) came in third (2:16.81).

Junior Chris Westgate (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) placed second in the 500 free (5:04.43), while senior Tanner Robertson (Carmel, Ind.) finished in third (5:19.86).

Sophomore Josh Mahaney (Saline, Mich.) completed the 100 fly in first place (52.70).  Rogers came in second (53.63) and Vassilakos was third (55.09).

Capizzio finished first in the 200 IM (1:56.41).

RELAYS

Wayne State won the 200 free relay (1:21.65).  The winning quartet was Cvetko, Mueller, Nowinski, and Rogers.

WSU landed second in the 200 medley relay (1:30.86).  The group consisted of Mueller, Anderson, Wolsek, and Cvetko.

The Warriors will compete at the GLIAC Championships this coming Wednesday through Saturday (Feb. 17-20) in Holland, Mich.

Sophomore Hannah Cooper (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) won in the 200 IM (2:17.71).

Freshman Justine Czyrka (Northville, Mich.) placed first in the 500 free (5:38.17) and fourth in the 1000 free (11:33.61).

Freshman Isidora Sekaric (Windsor, Ont.) finished second in the 200 free (1:57.09).

Junior Sydney Balk (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) placed second in the 200 back (2:13.46) and came in fourth in the 100 back (1:03.43).

Freshman Darina Malinova (Clinton Township, Mich. / Warren Mott) was the runner-up in the 200 breast (2:45.83).

Senior Jia Yi Koh (Subang Jaya, Malaysia) placed fourth in the 100 breast (1:07.65).

Sophomore Abby Warner (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Eisenhower) finished first in the 100 fly (1:01.44) and came in fourth in the 200 fly (2:14.93).

Freshman Megan Sieloff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) placed fourth in the 50 free (25.71).

Senior Haley Groteler (Holland, Mich. / West Ottawa) completed the 100 free in fourth place (54.75).

Freshman Juliana Witt (Macomb Township, Mich. / Dakota) landed in second in the 100 fly (1:01.68).

RELAYS

Wayne State won the 200 free relay (1:37.92).  The winning quartet was Koh, Groteler, Sieloff, and Sekaric.

WSU landed fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:50.81).  The group consisted of Sekaric, Koh, Groteler, and Sieloff.
