Notre Dame Gets Verbal from Red Bank YMCA’s Christopher Smith

Red Banks YMCA’s Christopher Smith has verbally committed to the University of Notre Dame‘s class of 2021.

“I’m very excited to continue my swimming career at Notre Dame. The coaching staff is tremendous and I can’t wait to train under them next fall.”

Smith specializes in distance free and IM, with backstroke being a tertiary strength for him. At the 2016 YMCA Short Course Nationals in April, Smith snagged 2nd overall in both the 1000 free and the 400 IM. He followed that up this past summer at Long Course Y-Nats with four top-8 finishes, including a 2nd-place showing in the 200 free.

Top Times

  • 200 free – 1:40.56/1:54.27
  • 500/400 free – 4:26.43/4:02.21
  • 1650y free – 15:46.98
  • 200 back – 1:48.54/2:08.57
  • 200 IM – 1:50.82/2:13.73
  • 400 IM – 3:51.45/4:32.38

On Notre Dame‘s 2015-16 top times list, Smith would rank as follows: #2 – 400 IM, #3 – 200 back, #4 – 1650 free, and #5 – 500 free.

Smith could push for a B final ACC showing in the 400 IM, while he’s not far out of scoring range in the 500 and 1650 free. He will add depth to a Notre Dame team trying to climb the ranks of the ACC, and especially help boost a thin IM group.
