The University of North Dakota men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each picked up comfortable dual-meet wins Saturday over South Dakota State in their home finale. The UND women beat the Jackrabbits, 211-83 while the Fighting Hawk men were 193-107 winners.
“Happy with our performances on senior day,” UND head swimming and diving coach Chris Maiello said. “Always good to see our seniors perform well on their senior meet. I want to thank our senior athletes and their parents for all their support, it’s been a terrific run for them.
“As far as the meet goes, we had some good swims and congrats to Mitch Raihle for making NCAA Zones, joining his teammate Nick Benson. Moving on, looking forward to our conference championships coming up and working on really trying to focus in on the finer details of our races.”
The women’s 200 medley relay was a winner to start the meet with a 1:45.67 time. Gabi Liedy was the 1000 free winner in 10:38.90 and also later won the 500 freestyle with a 5:10.09 time. Marlena Pigliacampi took the 200 free with a 1:53.91 time and touched first in the 100 butterfly in 56.44. Jess Warfiled was the 100 backstroke winner, touching in 58.23. Senior Steph Frey won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.54) and later also took the 100 free (51.54). Grace DiMeo took the 200 butterfly (2:06.94). Senor Alli Schwab out-touched Emily Hamel for the win in the 50 freestyle (23.98). Katie Breault won the 200 backstroke event with her 2:03.59 clocking and earned another first with a 2:07.99 in the 200 IM. The 200 free relay closed the meet with a 1:37.33 time for first place.
In diving, Ari Brace was second in both the 3-meter (233.40) and 1-meter events (240.50).
The men’s 200 medley relay scored a win to start the men’s meet with a 1:33.73 time. The 100 backstroke event went to Sam Marlow with a 52.21 time and he also won the 200 event with a 1:53.25 time. Ivar Iverson was the 100 breaststroke champion, touching in 57.85 and the 200 IM winner (1:56.56). Jacob Wielinski won both the 200 butterfly (1:54.81) and 500 freestyle (4:33.54). Lone male senior Noah Lucas was the 50 free (20.15) and 100 free winner (46.87). Tyler Zelen earned first-place honors in the 100 fly with a 50.73 showing. The 200 free relay finished the final home meet of the season with a winning 1:25.29 time.
In diving, Mitch Raihle qualified for the NCAA Zone meet with his winning score of 325.00 in the 3-meter event and also took third in the 1-meter event (294.15).
“A really good day of diving,” UND diving coach Brian Strom said. “Raihle qualified for Zones. Now we’ve got two freshmen men qualified. Both boards on the men’s side, very solid. No big misses and great competition, SDSU has got some really good divers as well. Next week we go to Minnesota. Ari struggled a little bit on 3-meter but rebounded on 1-meter. She had a pretty solid day. Just getting ready for conference now and we’ll get some platform in down at U of M.
UND will now have one final meet before the conference championships with a Feb. 3-4 trip to the Univerity of Minnesota. The Western Athletic Conference meet runs Feb. 22-25.
