FINA has announced that there were no anti-doping rules violations, either positive tests or other violations like refusal to test, from the whole 16 days of the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, Spain earlier this month.
A total of 462 in-competition tests were taken (378 urine, 84 blood), and all came back clean, including 69 EPO screenings. There were an addition 358 Pre-Competition blood tests done, for purposes of the Biological Passport program where blood samples are compared to past baseline tests, and those came back clean too, for a total of 820 clean tests.
As has been pointed out, this is not to say that 2013 has been a ‘clean’ year in the world of aquatics. So far, there have been over two-dozen reported positives across FINA’s 6 disciplines, in what has been an active year for doping both in swimming and in the greater sports world.
