No. 12 Indiana Women’s Water Polo Improves To 12-0 With Sweep At Indiana Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.  –  No. 15 Indiana posted two more wins on Sunday and improved to 12-0 to continue its best start in program history as it defeated Saint Francis (19-5) and Salem (18-6) at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

KEY MOMENTS VS. SAINT FRANCIS

  • Sophomore Louisa Downes won the opening sprint and was the first goal on the board with 6:43 to play to give IU the lead early. Saint Francis responded but the Hoosiers rattled off four unanswered goals from four different players to take a 5-1 lead.
  • The Hoosiers added on two more in the frame including a rebound buzzer beater from senior Kiki Mein as the lead grew to 7-1 after one.
  • The two teams each scored three goals in the second quarter as Indiana maintained its six-goal lead, 10-4, at half. Freshmen Nancy Baylor-Sefchick and Helga Terol Salvi each recorded goals in the second for IU.
  • In the third, sophomore Savannah Batchelor added two of IU’s four goals in the frame as the Red Flash were left scoreless to make it a 14-4 edge. Saint Francis added one more early in the fourth, but Indiana finished off the game with five unanswered including a goal in the final seconds from sophomore goalie Jasmine Higgs.

KEY MOMENTS VS. SALEM

  • Back-to-back goals from Downes and Sasser kicked things off in the tournament finale against the Tigers as Indiana built a 5-1 lead.
  • 10 total Hoosiers scored in the effort as it poured in six more goals in the second quarter for a 11-3 halftime lead.
  • Senior goalie Haley Hunter added three of her seven saves in the third quarter as the lead continued to grow for IU in the second half.
  • It outscored Salem 7-3 in the third and fourth quarters to pick up its second victory over the Tigers this season.

NOTES

  • Batchelor led the way with a hat trick for Indiana in the first game against Saint Francis. Tyner and Crouch each added two goals in the victory. Crouch also racked up four steals.
  • Downes led the way with three assists and a goal while four others added two assists each.
  • Higgs improved to 10-0 on the season with nine saves, two steals and a goal against the Red Flash.
  • Sasser paced IU in scoring against Salem, with four goals on four shots. Kidd added a hat trick with three goals while Downes, Baylor-Sefchick and Hathaway each recorded a pair of goals.
  • Kidd combined for six total points as she led with three assists.
  • Five different players recorded two steals against the Tigers.
  • Senior goalie Haley Hunter earned the victory in goal, her second of the weekend, against Salem with seven saves.

UP NEXT
The Hoosiers will head to UC Irvine to take part in the 2024 Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Feb. 23-25. They will kick things off against No. 5 USC on Friday at 7:15 p.m. ET.
