New Hampshire Women Top Maine, Providence; Friar Men Tame Black Bears

ORONO, Maine — The University of New Hampshire women’s swimming and diving team picked up a pair of victories against Providence (227-109) and Maine (208-137) on Friday afternoon at Stanley Wallace Pool in the regular-season finale.

“We used today’s meet as a tune up for conference and we are happy with where we are right now and we’re all looking forward to the next two weeks,” said UNH head coach Josh Willman.

The ‘Cats group of Kiersten Donnelly (Pottstown, Pa.), Jamy Lum (Honolulu, Hawaii), Chiara Pradissitto (Milan, Italy) and Cate Wardinski (Burke, Va.) won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.42.

Madison Lindstedt (Marion, Ohio) was victorious in the 500 free (5:10.31), while Maddie Fritz (Lansdale, Pa.) took first in the 50 breast (30.79).  Anna Metzler (Regensburg, Germany) recorded the win in the 100 fly with a mark of 56.85, as well as the 100 free (58.46) and Pradissitto added a win in the 50 free (24.50) and the 50 fly (26.33).

Junior Olivia Stille (Stockholm, Sweden) took gold in the 100 free at 53.34, while Lum won the 100 breast (1:06.63) and Lindstedt got her second victory of the day in the 200 free (1:58.82).

Stille, Metzler, Pradissitto and Wardinski combined for the win in the 200 free relay (1:38.72) to close out the solid performance for the Wildcats on the road.

The Wildcats return to action for the America East Championship beginning on Thursday, February 10th from the campus of WPI in Worcester, Mass.

Women’s Recap

Orono, Maine — The University of Maine women’s swimming and diving program defeated Providence College, 187-51, and fell to New Hampshire, 208-137, in a tri-meet on Friday evening at Wallace Pool on Senior Day for the Black Bears.

PhilAnn Dixon swept the diving events on her Senior Day, winning the 1-meter event with a score of 228.80 and the 3-meter at 243.90.

Morgan Bui had an impressive showing in the 50-yard breaststroke, taking the top mark in the event with a time of 30.58. Bui was the runner up in the 100 breaststroke at 1:07.41.

Sarah Mansfield turned in a runner-up showing in the 100 fly at 1:00.74 and placed fourth in the 50 butterfly at 27.39.

Cam Hargraves tied for third in the 100 backstroke event with a final time of 1:03.17 and placed fourth in the 50 freestyle at 25.28. Maggie White finished third in the 500 free at 5:19.88 while Kayla Loughman added a third place showing in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall at 1:07.97.

The team of Madison Edwards, Bui, Mansfield, and Loughman turned in a runner-up performance in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.80. Loughman, Mansfield, Hargraves, and Hannah Deighan finished third in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:39.60.

Men’s Recap

Orono, Maine — The University of Maine men’s swimming & diving team hosted Providence College on Senior Day at Wallace Pool on Friday afternoon. The Black Bears dropped the meet to the Friars, 192-92.

Finn Devers had an impressive performance for the Black Bears as he registered a win in the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:46.24 while adding a runner-up showing in the 100 free at 48.15.

Kaden Kilger was Maine’s top performer in the distance events, placing second in the 1000 free at 10:03.07 while taking third in the 500 free at 4:52.24.

Cam Waterlet tallied runner-up showings in the 100 fly (53.54) and 200 IM (2:02.27) with a third place finish in the 200 fly at 2:01.99. Kevin Arpin added a runner-up showing in the 50 free, touching the wall at 22.02, while placing third in the 100 free with a final time of 48.29.

Zach Hopp turned in a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.03 while placing fourth in the 200 breaststroke at 2:19.18. Nick Scott finished second in the 100 backstroke at 53.98.

Riley Clark was Maine’s lone diver on the day. Clark placed second in the 1-meter with a score of 234.20 before winning the 3-meter event at 280.72.

Maine’s team of Liam Blair, Hopp, Waterlet, and Arpin took second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.76. Zareck Tello, Devers, Scott, and Arpin teamed up to take second in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:28.22.

ORONO, MAINE – The Providence College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams traveled to Orono, Maine to compete on Friday, Jan. 28. The men defeated the University of Maine in dual-meet action, 192-92. The women’s team took part in a tri-meet with host Maine and the University of New Hampshire. The Friars fell to Maine, 187-151, and UNH, 227-109.

The men won 13 individual events on the day and claimed victories in both relays en route to a convincing team victory.

Seth Brodnick took home the first individual victory of the day for the Friars in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:00.25. Will Layden doubled up on the day with victories in the 50-yard free (21.89) and 100-yard freestyle events (47.89).

Providence continued its strong showing in the freestyle events with Justin Viotto’s wins in the 500-yard free (4:48.85). Viotto went on to win three individual events overall with victories in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.09) and 200-yard IM (1:58.27).

McGovern Brown outpaced the field in the 100-yard backstroke (52.80), while Aidan Hughes was victorious in the 200-yard back (1:58.71) and Ryan Sharp captured a win in the 100-yard butterfly (52.44).

Kevin Hood joined Viotto as a three-time winner. He topped the field in the 100-yard backstroke in 58:16 and claimed victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.16) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.86).

Will Karafanda compiled 247.50 points to claim top honors in the 1-meter diving event, defeating Riley Clark, who recorded 234.20 points.

McGovern Brown, Hood, Sharp and Brian Cantin teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.45. The Friars swept the relays as Cantin, Hughes, Brown and Layden finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:26.80).

On the women’s side, Sally Alrutz topped the field in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 27.91. Alrutz also tied for first place in the 100-yard backstroke with fell Friar teammate Sophia Roche. Both touched the wall ahead of their competitors in 1:02.96.

Nicole Boutry completed the 50-yard freestyle in second place with a time of 24.71, which was just two-tenths of a second off the first-place finish by New Hampshire’s Chiara Pradissitto (24.50).
