Mount St. Mary’s Women, St. Francis Brooklyn Men Pick Up Narrow Wins In Split Dual

Emmitsburg, Md. (January 21, 2023) – Mount St. Mary’s swim and dive’s regular season has come to an end after today’s meet versus St. Francis Brooklyn. The women’s team stole a win in a close meet by winning their final event, the final score 116-104. The men’s team wasn’t so lucky as they lost an exciting meet by a score 116-101.

The women’s team saw much success today as swimmers freshman Christina Lazari, sophomore Meghan Speicher, freshman Abigail Steckiel, and Lauren Wetzel came away with wins in their individual events. Lazari won the 50 free tallying a time 28.45, Speicher won the 200 free notching a time 2:10.56, Steckiel won the 100 fly with a final time 1:05.89, while Wetzel won the 100 back tallying a time 1:06.76.

The women’s team placed second in the 400-medley relay with a time 4:34.71 and first in the 400 free relay tallying a time 4:06.52. Their win in the 400-freestyle relay was the event that earned them a win in the competition, they won the heat by 19 seconds.

The men’s team placed first in both of their team events in the 400-medley with a time 3:54.46 and the 400-free tallying a time 3:37.15. Junior Jason Fitch competed in both team events while also placing first in his only individual event in the 100 back with a final time of 57.94.

Graduate student Peter Jones placed first in the 50 free with a time 23.82, second in the 100 free tallying a time 53.12, and helped his team place first in the 400 free relay. Sophomore Aidan Grady placed first in his only individual event in the 100-breast with a time 1:05.18 while also helping his team place first in the 400-medley relay.

EMMITSBURG, MD – St. Francis Brooklyn men’s swimming and diving took on Mount St. Mary’s Saturday afternoon and defeated the Mountaineers by a score of 116-101. The Terriers have now won two of three meets in the month of January.

Jedi Morland Janes won the first individual event, taking the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 9:08.87. He won the race by over 15 seconds. He would later win the 400-meter event by five seconds.

Robert Wagner followed that with a win in the 200-meter freestyle, breaking the two-minute mark with a time of 1:58.32. Teammate Daniel Matheus Santos finished third and Arthur Magno Queiroz took fourth.

St. Francis Brooklyn then finished in second, third and fourth in the 50-meter freestyle. Maurice Grabowski led the way with a time of 24.25. Toni Dragoja followed suit with a time of 24.44.

Robin Tatar won the 200-meter IM, breezing to victory by over three seconds. He finished the race in 2:14.91.

Matthew Bernstein then won the 1-meter dive, totaling a score of 212.00.

A strong 100-meter butterfly event followed Bernstein, as Vladimer Petras and Tatar out-touched two Mount St. Mary’s swimmers. All four competitors finished within half a second of eachother. Petras led the way with a time of 59.25.

Matheus Santos won another 100-meter freestyle (52.87) and Magno Quieroz finished third (54.73).

The day finished with a second-place result in the 400-meter freestyle relay.

EMMITSBURG, MD – St. Francis Brooklyn women’s swimming and diving hit the pool for a meet with Mount St. Mary’s Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 116-104.

The day began with another Abby Scruton victory in the 1-meter dive. The sophomore tallied a total of 220.25 points, defeating her next closest suitor by nearly 30 points. Kayla McKenzie added a third-place result, totaling 182.40 points.

Boel BergquistElayna PistrinCassandre Zenon and Mariajose Lopez followed that with a win in the 400-meter medley relay, getting to the wall just under two seconds faster than Mount St. Mary’s.

Lopez then won the 800-meter freestyle event by 30 seconds. Her time of 9:32.59 was the only time under 10 minutes. The senior added another victory in the 400-meter freestyle, winning by just under five seconds.

Bergquist continued her strong form, winning the 200-meter IM. She finished with a time of 2:25.09.

Pistrin posted another victory in the 100-meter breaststroke. Her time of 1:15.99 won by .3 seconds over Mount St. Mary’s.

Zenon had two second-place results, one in the 50-meter freestyle and the other in the 100-meter butterfly.

The Terriers closed out the day with a second-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle relay.
