Missouri State Men Head To Dallas For Battle With SMU

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State men’s swimming and diving team travels to Dallas, for a dual with SMU on Jan. 30, at 11 a.m. This will be the second-consecutive year the Bears have competed at SMU.

Bear Bites 

  • The men’s squad is also is coming off a MAC Championship in 2020.
  • Freshman Robert Hill has made an immediate impact. The Kansas City product swam the 14th-fastest time in the country at 48.08 in the 100-backstroke in his first-ever collegiate meet against Missouri back on Nov. 7.
  • As a result of his efforts, Hill was named MAC Swimmer of the Week (Nov. 11).
  • Previously at Drury, senior Michael Claunch won the 1-meter diving event to earn a zone cut. Claunch also finished second in the 3-meter dives. Claunch’s performance earned him the MAC Diver of the Week award.
  • Claunch followed up his efforts with another zone cut last week in the 1-meter dive at Notre Dame.
  • Last week at Notre Dame John David Spence posted a new personal best of 300.98 on the 3-meter boards.
  • Senior Michael Hampel recorded a win at Drury in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.79.
  • Hampel posted two top-three performances at Notre Dame placing second in the 200 breaststroke (2:01.91) and third in the 100 breaststroke (55.22).
  • Hampel was a gold medalist in the 100 breaststroke and 400 medley relay at the 2019-20 MAC Championships. He also was a silver medalist in the 200 breaststroke and 200 medley relay.
  • As a freshman, Jonathan Hill was part of the 2019-20 MAC gold medalist 800 freestyle relay team and stepped to the podium in the 200, 500 and 1650 free events.
  • Freshman Dylan Moffatt wasted no time making his presence known, winning his first collegiate event at Drury. The Independence, Iowa, won the 1000 free with a time of 9:27.88.
  • Moffatt then followed up that performance by swimming a 15:16.47 1650 at Notre Dame which is the 25th best mark among all collegiate swimmers this year.
  • All-MAC returnees include Arthur Cury, Claunch, Hampel, Hill, Pawel Krawczyk, Lewis and Sebastian Odent.

Coach Dave Collins 

“Our plan is to take what we learned at Notre Dame and make improvements,” Missouri State head swimming and diving coach Dave Collins said. “Our schedule this year has really involved into one of the most challenging meet schedules that we have ever had. SMU just jumped into the Top-25. We will have our hands full but we are going to throw some guys in different events than there used to and give them every opportunity to build on championship performances.”

  • Dave Collins (Drury, 2005) is in his 10th season as Missouri State head coach.
  • Collins garnered and MAC Coach of the Year honors in 2019-20.
  • Under Collins watch, the Bears have won three MAC championships.
  • Last year, Collins engineered an unforgettable campaign, the MSU men were dominant at the MAC Championships, claiming ten conference champion citations throughout the meet. Standout senior Antonio Thomas was recognized as the MAC’s Co-Swimmer of the Year and Most Outstanding Senior. Michael Claunch earned his second trip to the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships to represent the Bears on the 1-and-3 meter boards.
  • As head coach, Collins and the Bears’ staff have produced 16 All-MAC first teamers.
  • Academically, with team GPAs of 3.0 or higher, both Bear squads have annually earned CSCAA Scholar All-America team honors.
  • Since his arrival at Missouri State, the Bears have broken every men’s record in the non-freestyle events.
  • Collins has taken the Bears’ recruiting efforts to new heights. He and his coaching staff are responsible for signing Missouri State’s first top-100 recruit: 2012 Olympian Uvis Kalnins of Latvia. CollegeSwimming.com listed Kalnins as the No. 68 overall swimmer in the 2012 recruiting class.
  • Before becoming head coach, Collins served as an assistant for four seasons at Missouri State under MSU Hall of Famer Jack Steck.

Take a Look Ahead 

  • After the conclusion of this week’s meet at SMU, the Swim Bears will be back in action Feb. 13, when they host Little Rock. Start time is for 10 a.m. at Hammons Student Center. Both men’s and women’s programs will be participating in the meet.
