Sweeping the relays is usually a great route to winning a state title, and that was the case for the Middleton High School girls’ swimming and diving program at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 Girls’ State Championships.
Middleton won all three relays, which easily catapulted it to a third straight state crown in a meet also filled with individual winners who have committed to Power 4 college programs.
It was the second straight year Middleton swept all three relays at the state meet.
The team of Tae Martin (26.48), Rian Jost (28.98), Brynn Sundell (24.25) and Sulia Miller (23.12) started things off by winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:42.83.
In the 200 free relay, the squad of Miller (24.38), Clara Kiehl (23.53), Abigail Frommelt (23.70) and Jane Garlock (22.36) topped the field in a time of 1:33.97.
Lastly, the quartet of Frommelt (51.77), Martin (51.84), Sundell (50.27), Garlock (49.59) finished the meet off in style, winning the 400 free relay in a time of 3:23.47.
Garlock was one of the multiple-event winners, taking the 50 free in a personal best time of 22.77 and the 100 free in a personal best time of 49.12. Garlock was 2nd at last year’s state meet in the 100 free and 3rd in the 50 free. Her previous best in the 50 free was 23.38, while her old best in the 100 free was 49.70.
The other double winner was Waukesha South/Mukwohago senior Ella Antoniewski, who has committed to Georgia.
Antoniewski first won the 200 free in a time of 1:48.11, repeating as champion in that event. Antoniewski also defended her title in the 500 free, topping the field in a time of 4:50.79.
She wasn’t the only swimmer bound for a Power 4 college program to win.
Alyse Block, an Alabama commit from Oregon High School, won the 200 IM in 2:00.81, improving on a 2nd-place finish from last year in the event.
Caroline Wanezek, a Wisconsin commit from Brookfield East, improved on a 5th-place finish from last year in the 100 fly by winning the event this year in a time of 54.77.
In the 100 back, Oregon senior Olivia Sina, who has committed to UCLA, defended her title in the 100 back in a time of 54.01.
Another future college swimmer to win was Verona Area senior Annika Curran, a Wisconsin commit who won the 100 breast in 1:01.85. She was 2nd in the event last year.
The diving competition came down to a close battle between freshmen teammates from Middleton.
Hanna Jodlowski won the event with 490.75 points, just ahead of Quinn Mazur, who had a final total of 489.65.
