Something happened for the only second time in the 26-year history of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Swimming and Diving Championships.

McQuaid Jesuit became just the second school to sweep the three relay events, going on to win the state championship on the strength of that relay dominance, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. It was the same quartet of Ian Miller, Luke McCormack, Ben Hinds and Xavier Joseph that comprised all three relays, helping McQuaid Jesuit finish 18 points ahead of runner-up Chaminade.

In the 200 medley relay, the team of Miller (22.85), McCormack (25.64), Hinds (21.15) and Joseph (21.24) won with a time of 1:30.88.

The same quartet, but a different order of Joseph (21.87), Hinds (20.29), McCormack (20.71) and  Miller (20.07) later won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:22.94.

In the 400 free relay, the squad of Joseph (48.93), Hinds (44.62), McCormack (45.44) and Miller (44.93) touched the wall first in a time of 3:03.92.

The only multi-event winner individually was Stuyvesant senior Liam Mac Colla, a Villanova commit.

Mac Colla swept the sprint freestyle events, taking the 50 free in 20.27 and the 100 free in a personal best time of 44.10.

Other individual event winners were:

  • Chaminade senior Gavin Buckley, a UNC-Wilmington commit, won the 200 free in a time of 1:38.67.
  • Saratoga junior Anderson Baird claimed the 200 IM in a time of 1:48.81 after finishing 4th last year.
  • Jericho senior Tristan Yang captured the 1-meter diving event with 582.60 points.
  • Hoosic Valley senior Christian Jerome, a Cleveland State commit, repeated as champion in the 100 fly with a personal best time of 47.85.
  • Bellmore-Merrick junior Johnny Macko won the 500 free in a personal best time of 4:28.31.
  • Canisius junior Gabe Russell-Webster claimed the 100 back in a personal best time of 49.57.
  • Manhasset senior Andrew Koek, an MIT commit, won the 100 breast in a personal best time of 54.65 after finishing 3rd last year.

I like how they have the bonus final. Gives 8 extra athletes a chance to compete at state a second round!

Are the top two teams listed in these team scores even public schools?

Apparently the NYSPHSAA is open to “public, parochial, and private schools” even though there is a separate state association for private schools.

It’s a pretty dumb system. Our state championship meet ostensibly has two meets happening at the same time. The Federation meet includes public schools (NYSPHSAA- though as Robert noted, private schools can compete in this category), as well as the Catholic schools and PSAL from NYC.
The NYSPHSAA meet is run concurrently and results are separated out- everyone swims together, then two award ceremonies. It’s terribly confusing and I don’t know why we do it like this.
You can’t view separate results for each meet on Meet Mobile, only full federation results and team scores.
McQuaid obviously won both portions of the meet. Chaminade & Stuyvesant are Fed schools, so in the public Hauppage-Smithtown ended up 2nd.
