McDonald, Johnston Win Twice As Princeton Women Cruise Past Columbia

Margaux McDonald and Sabrina Johnston won two individual events each as the Princeton women’s swimming and diving team defeated Columbia 202-98 Friday morning in DeNunzio Pool.

Princeton won all 16 events on the day to improve its record to 8-0 before heading to Christsburg, Va.., to swim against Virginia Tech and Penn State Saturday.

McDonald won the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke, while Johnston took the 50 and 100 butterfly races. Princeton’s other individual winners were Nathalie Valdman (500 free), Dakota Tucker (200 free), Alexa Pappas (50 backstroke), Ela Noble (50 free), Heidi Smithwick (100 free), Liza Whitmire (100 back), Jess Yeager (200 IM) and Eleanor Sun (100 IM).

Princeton also won the two relays, as Isabella KorblyKamila IsaievaEliza Brown and Donata Katai took the 200 medley relay and Smithwick, Noble, Edie Simecek and Sun took the final event of the day, the 200 free relay.

PRINCETON, N.J. — The Columbia women’s swimming and diving team traveled to New Jersey to take on the Princeton Tigers on Friday morning. The Lions were not able to come away with a win, as the Tigers emerged with a 202-98 victory.

Columbia’s divers showed up in a big way, with the star of the show being Alice Diakova. She came away with a victory in the 3m, notching a score of 298.88. Chloe Leung (284.10) and Macy Pine (281.40), placed second and third, respectively, in the event. Meanwhile on the 1m boards, Pine took second place with a score of 298.58. Diakova was right behind her in third place with a score of 284.93.

“Fantastic performances from all three Lion divers today,” Head Diving Coach Scott Donie said. “Everyone scored above the NCAA Zone qualifying score in both events. Clutch performances from everyone across the board.”

As for the swimmers, the Lions had multiple second place finishers. This included Mia Avansino, who grabbed second in the 200-free with a time of 1:51.93, and Aziza Ganihanova, who placed second in the 100-fly with a time of 54.81.

The Lions will be back at it on Saturday, January 27 when they will host Dartmouth. Columbia’s homecoming meet will begin at 11:00 a.m.
