Matheus Santana Breaks Caeleb Dressel’s Junior World Record at Maria Lenk

On Saturday morning at the Maria Lenk Trophy in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which is Brazil’s National Championship meet, Matheus Santana has set the Junior World Record in the men’s 100 free.

This is another one of those records that isn’t really the fastest by an 18 & under male ever, however Santana’s 48.85 is still plenty impressive for a swimmer who has been climbing and tearing his way through the Brazilian sprint ranks for about 4 years now.

The ‘starting point,’ as of April 1, 2014, for this Junior World Record is the 48.97 that American Caeleb Dressel swam at last summer’s Junior World Championships. That’s a meet that Santana was forced to pull out of due to complications with his diabetes.

The 100 freestyle is a significant race all around the world, but in Brazil, where the biggest stars in the country’s history have been 100 freestylers (Cesar Cielo, Gustavo Borges), and where their last Olympic relay medal in 2000 was in the 400 free relay, 100 freestylers take on a special star-power.

That swim gave him the 2nd seed behind Marcelo Chierighini in prelims. Chierighini was a 48.72.

Top 5 out of prelims:

1. Marcelo Chierighini – 48.72
2. Matheus Santana – 48.85
3. Nicolas Oliveira – 49.01
4. Cesar Cielo – 49.20
5. Joao de Lucca – 49.38

48.61! 😯
Huge performance for the youngster!

And 48.67 for De Lucca!
I really thought he couldn’t swim in long course. 😆

Your relay looks better and better.

Actually just updating

It seems like Marcelo is sick.. he will not swim the relay because of a medical order, just said that on TV

According to Pussieldi Matheus has still 2 big things that need to improve

His start is subpar.. and he swam like he was sharing the line with someone.. going using one side of the lane. returning from the other..

This is no the Jr. World Record. 48.07 by Mcevoy is. Odds are, Dressel smashes this “record” in the summer.

Nice, the Brazilians could have a very competitive 4*100 free team by the time Rio rolls around. Of course they will need to get the valuable experience in the next couple years, and we all know they haven’t taken the event that seriously (sitting Cielo and all). They will need to start qualifying for the finals before anything. Nonetheless, it’s good to see a next generation of swimmers from Brazil coming out of Cielo’s shadow.

I have a short memory, they did qualify in last years championships, but hopefully that wasn’t a fluke thing given their history.

Will Chalmers go for youth olympics? or Horton? Sedov is older and cannot go.

Santana will probably go at Adult Pan Pacs..

Santana went 24,14 and came back ar 24,69 he still can improve his front half…

I don’t think Horton is going to anything junior now that he is in the senior team. And he will have his hands full too with Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacs.

Santana coming home is very different than most brazilian sprinters(who always open strong and try to hold the piano at the end of the race).

I haven’t seen any races by Caeleb Dressel since last December. What is he up to?

probably just like any other 17 year old, hanging out with friends and training.

Cam McEvoy was 48.07, at 18 I’m pretty sure. That, I suppose, should be the target.

Agree.. hope to see a 48,5 at night.. and going near mcevoy time at Pan Pacs..

It is the first time in long time Santana went to full training

Last year he spent a lot of time out of pool cause of diabetis.. then when he went 49,21 at Open he was doing half training only.. he resumed training full force only on january this year
