Masters World Champion Hit With 2-Year Doping Suspension

A second Egyptian swimmer has been hit with a two-year doping suspension after a positive test at a November Egyptian meet, FINA announced today.

The suspension was awarded by the Egyptian National Anti-Doping Organization to Shehab Mohamid Younis, who tested positive on November 26th for three banned substances. That positive test came two days after that of Norhan Naser Salah, who received an equivalent similar suspension last month for a positive test for ephedrine.

Younis tested positive for Eticholanolone, Testosterone, and 5b-androstane-3a,17b-diol, which are all Anabolic Androgenic Steroids.

Younis, who is 27-years old, represented his country at the 2011 and 2013 World Championships. While the country is becoming known more for their male distance swimmers, Younis has been one of their brightest stars in the sprints. He swam 23.49 to place 49th in the 50 free and 24.70 for 39th in the 50 fly in Barcelona in 2013, and was the 2014 Masters World Champion in the latter event in 2014.

He was Egypt’s lone male pool-swimming representative at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, where he placed 34th in the 50 free; his best time in the event is 22.77 (that we can find).

Younis’ suspension dates back to February 18th, 2015, which leaves him ineligible to compete at a second-straight Olympic Games.

A lot of masters swimmers are cheating, or if you prefer, using performance enhancing drugs such as testosterone, these days, without any drug testing. When an individual sets a record that beats 3-4 age groups below that swimmers age by a lot, it is a drug performance. The only exception is an individual who was an Olympian or world class swimmer [“Top 10 in the world”] in his/her prime and always great.

I agree – calling him a Masters swimmer in the headline is not representative of the information in the article.

Braden – it seems a little unfair for your headline to say “Masters World Champion…” First, although it has been discussed, and there has been unproven speculation about various Masters swimmers doping, Masters Swimming does not drug test, nor does it have a list of banned substances. This is primarily due to the fact that for health reasons many older swimmers take certain drugs for heart ailments and glaucoma, among others, that would trigger positive tests for WADA banned substances. Second, if he is a Masters World Champion, that was said in one clause in the fourth paragraph in an article that had far more to do with his non-Masters swimming, and doesn’t seem like that is the one thing… Read more »
