While state meets are on the horizon, a big boys dual took place in Pennsylvania last week between Malvern Preparatory and Germantown Academy.
In a nailbiter, Malvern Prep earned a 94-92 win to earn its first Inter-Academic League championship since 2019, when it shared the title with Episcopal Academy.
The win also ended Germantown Academy’s four-year reign as league champion. Germantown had beaten Malvern four years in a row in their annual dual meet.
“Happy to bring back a championship and the winning tradition to Warren Avenue,” said third-year head coach Paul Edwards, who won two league titles when he was a swimmer at Malvern.
Malvern Prep was led by junior and Minnesota commit Henry Anstine, and senior Billy Beck, who has committed to New York University.
Anstine was the winner in the 100 free (45.50) and 200 free (1:38.63), while Beck took the 50 free (20.95) and 100 fly (49.84).
Both were also a part of two winning relay teams.
Malvern Prep first won the 200 medley relay behind the team of Brady Gallagher (24.88), Max Rose (26.50), Beck (21.79), and Alex de Vries (21.47).
In the 200 free relay, the squad of Beck (20.92), Rose (21.83), Jonathan Richardson (21.70), and Anstine (21.37) won in a time of 1:25.82.
The 400 free relay was won by Malvern Prep’s team of Gallagher (48.04), de Vries (48.94), Richardson (47.85), and Anstine (44.80) in a time of 3:09.63.
Germantown got wins out of sophomore Shane Cowley in the 200 IM (1:56.81), Nathanel Salomon in diving (320.10), junior Oliver Ritchey in the 500 free (personal best 4:34.47), sophomore Nick Truong in the 100 back (personal best 51.72), and junior Matthew Holleman in the 100 breast (59.80).
The two teams will see each other again soon, as both will compete in the annual Easterns meet Feb. 13-14.
The league girls’ title was won by Germantown Academy, which had a perfect 5-0 league record.
