Reigning NCAA and World champion Luca Urlando dominated his signature event in Athens on Friday, winning the 200 fly in 1:38.65. While Urlando wasn’t trying to focus on the overall time, he did have some positive takeaways from the race. The butterfly specialist liked that he kept his stroke together on the back end of the swim, which showed in his splits as his last 50 was 25.95, the fastest last 50 he’s ever had in a 200 fly.

1:50 LCM incoming.
His arc is so satisfying because after everything he’s been through I’ve been conditioned to expect absolutely nothing from him. Can’t wait to see what surprises are next!
My guess is he does the 100/200 fly and 100 back at NCAAs
Is this a safe space for me to say he looks like Shane Hollander
Every time I see Hudson Williams mentioned for NC State I do a double take
My goat
It would be amazing if he could get down into the 1:50.00 range in his 200m fly by 2028. I think he could be close, but with semifinals adding another layer of stress, I don’t know. Semis are useless, in my opinion.
Agree that semis are useless and impact the best of the bests’ ability to swim as fast as possible in major competitions.
ON THE TOPIC of Luca going 25 on his last 50 of the 200 scy race is freaking amazing! SO happy for this guy – a book needs to be written about his journey. Wishing him the best.
Agreed for 200s of stroke and IM
Yup.
Semis aren’t necessary but he may only swim the 200 fly, maybe another event.
So 3 rounds of the 200 fly shouldn’t wear him down. And remember that the semis is on one day and the final swim is on the next day, so he has a full day of rest between swims.
College swimmers are used to doing a lot more in a lot less time and he doesn’t seem to have an issue with swimming fast on day 4 of NCAAs.
You’re probably right. Just the thought of going three rounds of anything at my age tires me out.
I mean he went 1:51 with semis so I think he can handle semis lol
