After qualifying 5th after the prelims in the women’s 200 breaststroke at the Italian Swimming Championships, Lisa Angiolini, out of lane 2, managed to blast a huge career best to not only take the win in the event, but also demolish the former Italian Record time of 2:23.06 set by Francesca Fangio in 2021 with a time of 2:22.23.
This swim makes her the first Italian woman ever to reach the 2:22 barrier in the 200 breast, as the former national record holder, Francesca Fangio, fittingly finished just behind Angiolini in a sort of ‘passing of the torch’ moment. However, the results show that Angiolini ran away with this one.
Angiolini now ranks 4th in the world this season, after taking well over a second and a half off of her career best before this meet of 2:23.90 at the Lausanne Swim Cup in March of this year.

Angiolini did not make this race close at any point, having opened up in 32.08; the next-closest competitor at the first wall was Francesca Zucca in 3.36 (she ultimately would finish 6th in 2:27.73). That momentum carried through to the 100 turn; she was now supported by a more than two-second buffer over the field.
By the 150 mark, she had put this race to bed, leading by over three seconds, before touching the final wall over three and a half seconds better than any other swimmer in the field, including the now former Italian Record holder Fangio.
