With just over two years until the start of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic committees will begin accepting applications to join the event’s volunteer crew in July.
Officials will begin accepting the applications on July 14, the day that the application portal opens. The volunteer application portal can be accessed here.
In a statement from LA28 Executive Officer Reynold Hoover, he described volunteers as the “backbone of the Games,” in an effort to urge people to apply to volunteer.
“As fans fill the seats and athletes take the global stage, behind every event, every venue and every moment is the LA28 Volunteer Crew,” Hoover said in the release, reported by CBS News. “Volunteers are the backbone of the Games. They are a friendly face who helps welcome the world, create memorable experiences and bring the Olympic and Paralympic spirit to life.”
There is a wide range of responsibilities for volunteers to take part in, from welcoming guests to medical assistance and translation help. When applying, there will be an area to indicate the top three preferred role categories, though there is no guarantee that you will be granted any of those three categories.
Volunteer roles will be sorted through the following categories:
- Ceremonies
- Communications
- Driving
- Experience
- Medical
- Operations
- Sport
- Technology
Though primarily based in the Los Angeles Area, there will also be needs for volunteers in Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), New York (New York), Columbus (Ohio), Nashville (Tennessee), St. Louis (Missouri), San Jose, and San Diego (California).
Volunteer work for the Olympic Games will span from March to August of 2028, and August to September for the Paralympics, with volunteers needing to commit to at least 10 shifts within each period.
According to LA28, if selected from the initial application pool, the next step will be an invitation to the Volunteer Experience Center in Los Angeles for an in-person assessment. If you are unable to attend the in-person assessment, a virtual option will be available.
