A few days ago, American Olympian and former World Record Holder Mary T. (Meagher) Plant raced at the 2026 Augusta Dog Days of Summer LCM Masters meet, and she took down the women’s 100 butterfly Masters world record in the 60-64 age group with her time of 1:07.78.

This is not her first time holding a 100 fly world record, setting her first world record in the event at 14 years old in 1980 and holding it until 1999. Her best time in the event stands at 57.93, which she swam at the U.S. Nationals in August of 1981 and took more than a second off her former world record time of 59.26.

Plant’s time took about half-a-second off the former American and world record time of 1:08.24 set by Ellen Reynolds in August of 2024. Reynolds is a Masters swimming legend in her own right, owning world records across all four strokes and earning an induction into the Masters Swimming Hall of Fame in May.

Fittingly, Plant became the first woman in the 60-64 age group to swim 1:07 in the long course 100 fly. She was also the first woman in history to swim 57 in the long course 100 fly.

Also at the meet, she swam the 200 freestyle, touching in 2:19.68 to come in about three seconds off the American Record time of 2:16.57 set by Reynolds in 2024.

This is Plant’s 2nd long course world record after she took down the 200 fly world record last August in 2:39.31. She also holds the 60-64 Masters world records in the 100 and 200 fly SCM in 1:06.30 and 2:36.16 respectively.

She returned to the world of competitive swimming last summer, and at this meet last year, she swam 1:09.59 in the 100 fly, about two seconds slower than her time last weekend.

Agree. And one of the kindest, too! Whenever there’s a Mary T. article on SwimSwam, all I can think is: “Legend“. I hope she keeps having fun and swimming fast!
