At the Brazilian Junior Winter Championships in Rio, future Auburn Tiger Kauã Santos Carvalho nearly clipped the World Junior Record in the 50 breaststroke, touching in 27.08, just over a tenth of a second off of Germany’s Jan Malte Grafe‘s 2025 World Junior Record of 26.95 from the World Junior Championships in Otopeni, Romania last summer.
Santos Carvalho, competing in the Junior II Division, announced his commitment to Auburn in May. His 50 breast time of 27.08 sits just three hundredths outside of the top 25 performers in the world this season. American Finn Brooks sits 25th this season in 27.05.
He picked up several wins on the championships, including the top times in the 100 breast (1:01.17) and 200 breast (2:17.15), both were just off of his best times that he swam just over a week earlier at the Brazilian National Swimming Championships in 1:00.93 and 2:15.78, respectively.
Kaua Miguel Lopes, a Junior I swimmer, cracked the division record in the 100 freestyle in 49.64, topping the two-year record from Kaua Marinho in 49.74.
Prior to his finals swim, Miguel Lopes, the son of the coach for the Corinthians team in which he represents, Reginaldo Lopes, had won silver in the 50 free (23.63) and bronze in the 200 free (1:53.40); his 100 free marked his first gold medal of the meet.
The time also moves him past prominent NCAA freestyler Gui Caribe as the 5th fastest Junior I 100 freestyler in the history of the event for Brazil.
One athlete managed to secure five wins at the meet, that being Minas’ Agatha Amaral, who won the 100 breast (1:10.42), 200 breast (2:31.43), 200 back (2:18.37), 200 IM (2:17.15), and 400 IM (4:46.52).
In all, 17 records were broken in Rio, 16 of which were championship records, and one Brazilian Category record.
