“Just Trying to Race and Get the Job Done”: Lilly King on Her Last 100 Breaststroke Race Ever

2025 World Championships

In what turned out to be her last 100 breaststroke race ever, Lilly King took 9th in the semifinals of the event on night 2 in Singapore.

King posted a time of 1:06.26, missing the final by less than .1 as Lithuania’s Kotryna Teterevkova snagged the #8 spot in 1:06.17.

In a post-race interview, King spoke on her semifinals race and her reaction to it being her last 100 breast.

“That honestly wasn’t even running through my head during that last 100, you know, just trying to race and get the job done,” King said. “And you know that’s what happens sometimes, a couple days ago I was thinking I was gonna have to scratch the 100 breast so the fact that I was able to come out and put together that race, I’m really proud of it.”

King was 15th coming out of prelims this morning, narrowly advancing to the semifinals after turning in a 1:06.93. In a post shared to her instagram story, she commented that the fast swims in the two heats after her were making her sweat.

Asked about how she was managing the effects of the food poisoning that hit TeamUSA in Thailand last week, King said:

“I think at this point it’s just getting stronger everyday, and that’s all we can do and keep a positive attitude because, you know, moping around is not gonna do us any good. So I’m just trying to be a good teammate and help everybody else work through it too.”

Other big names missing from the women’s 100 breast final include Ireland’s Mona McSharry and Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte. McSharry, who won bronze at the Paris Olympics before taking a significant chunk of time off after the Games, was the top seed coming into semifinals, only to take 11th overall in 1:06.33. Meanwhile Meilutyte, the 2023 World Champion, finished 13th in 1:06.57.

Hope it works out that she gets a final swim in the 4×100 medley. Would be great sto see her one last time in the 100. And you know she is dropping some nasty split if they need her too.

Whatever happens in the pool, this is going to be her last week of interviews. What do you think of Russia coming back? Is UVA better than IU at training breaststroke? DON’T HOLD BACK LILY!
