Italian Men Help Propel Nation To Runner-Up Status So Far In WUGS Medal Table

2025 World University Games

The penultimate night of racing at the 2025 World University Games saw the nation of Italy surge past both the Individual Neutral Athletes and Japan to rank 2nd in the overall medal table.

The United States remains too far ahead to be caught with just one day remaining, as the stars n’ stripes have amassed a huge lead of 37 medals, including 20 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze.

Italy has accumulated 9 medals in all, including 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze. That’s well off its 2021 haul from Chedgdu which saw the country collect 31 pieces of hardware – 8 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze.

On day six, Italy saw its men’s contingent help propel results, with Gianmarco Sansone leading off with a gold in the men’s 100m butterfly.

Tommaso Griffante also contributed via his silver in the men’s 800m free while the 50m breast saw Italy grab gold via Federico Rizzardi.

All told, 22 nations have earned at least one medal through day six. That’s already well ahead of the 2021 Games which saw just 17 countries appear on the medal table.
