Indiana Women’s Water Polo Fall To Arizona State In Kalbus Invite Finale

IRVINE, Calif.  – No. 10 Indiana came up empty in the second half as it fell to No. 9 Arizona State, 16-9, in its final game of the Kalbus Invitational on Sunday.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Indiana (7-8, 0-1 MPSF) went toe-to-toe with the Sun Devils early on, exchanging the first four goals of the first quarter. Arizona State was able to get a goal up with 11 seconds left on a power play to take a 5-4 advantage after one.
  • Senior Tina Doherty kept IU within one but Arizona State netted a pair of goals to go up three with 2:32 remaining. A trio of Hoosiers combined to net three goals in the final two minutes of play but ASU still maintained that one-point edge, 9-8, at the break.
  • The Hoosier offense would go cold in the second half, not recording a single goal as ASU outscored them 7-0 in the third and fourth quarters.

Saturday Recap

IRVINE, Calif. – No. 17 Indiana picked up a pair of ranked wins at the Barbara Kalbus Invite on Saturday, as it defeated No. 18 LMU (16-15) in overtime and No. 11 UC San Diego (10-9).

 KEY MOMENTS

  • Indiana went goal-for-goal with the Lions in the first five minutes of play as the game was tied 3-3. A powerplay goal for LMU gave it the slight edge after one, 4-3.
  • Goals from senior Izzy Mandema and sophomore Katherine Hawkins put Indiana up one with 5:44 to play in the second quarter. One of junior Lanna Debow’s goals kept IU with the lead but LMU scored four unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead at the half.
  • IU added three goals in the third quarter as it still trailed by three, 12-9. In the fourth, the Hoosiers turned on the jets and scored three unanswered goals to tie the game at 12-all. Going goal-for-goal again in the final minutes of regulation, Debow’s goal on a Zoe Crouch feed made it a one-point lead, 15-14, with 1:55 to go. But LMU added the equalizer with just five seconds remaining to force overtime.
  • The only goal of the overtime period was scored in the first overtime by Debow who notched the game winner with a minute to play.
  • Coming out strong against No. 11 UC San Diego, Indiana took leads after the first and second quarters including a 6-3 halftime advantage. The Tritons evened things up in the third quarter, outscoring the Hoosiers, 4-1, and knotting the game at 7-7 going to the final eight minutes of play.
  • Battling back in the fourth, Indiana battled through a couple of one-goal deficits as Crouch’s goal with an assist to freshman Sophia Sollie tied the game at 9-9 with 4:01 to play. Both teams would get multiple shots off but only one goal stuck as Hawkins would convert on the power play with 1:32 to go and would be the difference maker.
