Indiana Promotes Luke Ryan To Associate Head Coach

Indiana has promoted Luke Ryan to associate head coach, the school announced on Friday. Ryan has been with the Hoosiers since 2020 and will enter his 7th season with the program this fall.

In addition to his associate head coach title, Ryan will remain as director of recruiting. He was first promoted in 2023 to assistant head swimming coach and director of recruiting.

Ryan has primarily coached the distance freestyle group during his time with the Hoosiers. Zalan Sarkany most recently swam to a 2nd place finish in the 1650 free and 4th place finish in the 500 free at the 2026 NCAA Championships. Sarkany went out in a 8:33.10 for the first 1000 free of his 1650 free at 2026 NCAAs to set a new NCAA record.

Back in 2023, Ryan served as an assistant coach for Tunisia at the 2023 World Championships, primarily serving as a coach for Ahmed Hafnaoui. Ryan currently serves on the national team staff for Czechia.

Prior to joining the Hoosiers, Ryan spent one season as a volunteer assistant with fellow Big Ten program Ohio State. Ryan graduated from Penn State in 2019 and spent one season with the Nittany Lions as an undergraduate assistant while he was a student.

Ryan joins Cory Chitwood and John Long, Jr. as associate head coaches on the Indiana coaching staff. The three are associate head coaches under head coach Ray Looze.

The Indiana men finished 3rd at the 2026 NCAA Championships while the women were 7th. The men’s program captured the 2026 Big Ten Championship title, earning over 300 more points than 2nd place Michigan.
