NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State swimming & diving closed out its first meet of the season against Quincy, Friday afternoon at Horton Pool. The Redbirds claimed 12 event wins and tallied 180 points across the meet.
To kick the meet off for Illinois State, the 200 Medley relay team of Tyler, Fris, Snow, and Turken picked up the first event win for the Redbirds with a time of 1:47.62.
In the 1000 Y Free, Illinois State secured a 1-2 finish as Sophomore Hope Westphal earned the win with a mark of 11:05.33. Senior Maya Burkstrand tallied a runner-up finish with a time of 11:23.96.
The Redbirds swept the podium in the 200 Y Free with Sophomore Amelia Murphy taking the top step with a time of 1:59.07. Sophomore Ines Kieffel earned a runner-up finish with a mark of 2:00.67, with Junior Sylvia Admire wrapping up a Redbirds 1-2-3 finish with a time of 2:01.18.
Senior Chloe Tyler secured a victory in the 100 Y Back with a mark of 58.08. Junior Bailey Gott earned a runner-up finish in her first appearance as a Redbird with a time of 58.72. Senior Delaney Boulden helped Illinois State sweep the podium with a mark of 1:01.24 to finish third.
Freshman Ava Ostendorf secured her first collegiate event win with a time of 1:07.53 in the 100 Y Breast. Sophomore Hailey Fris added a runner-up finish with a mark of 1:08.58.
In the 200 Y Fly, the Redbirds earned another podium sweep with Senior Giulia Basco taking the event win with a mark of 2:06.33. Sophomore Avery Watson tallied a runner-up finish with a time of 2:15.78. Freshman Megan Sego, in her first collegiate meet, earned a third-place finish with a mark of 2:17.96.
Illinois State swept the podium in the 50 Y Free, as Graduate Mia Snow tallied a win with a mark of 24.20. Senior Ella Turken finished runner-up with a time of 24.79, as Freshman Elle Dameworth earned a third-place finish in her first appearance at Illinois State.
Sophomore Alexandra Davis picked up her first career event win with a victory in the 100 Y Free with a mark of 53.63. Kieffel earned her second runner-up finish with a mark of 54.35 as Senior Adi Luker completed the Redbird podium sweep with a third-place finish and a time of 55.74.
In the 200 Y Back, Tyler earned her second victory of the day with a mark of 2:06.87. Gott earned her second runner-up finish on the day with a time of 2:07.73. Fris swept the podium for Illinois State with a mark of 2:09.24.
Ostendorf earned her second win of the day with a time of 2:24.52 in the 200 Y Breast.
Westphal tallied her second event win of the day with a mark of 5:24.34 in the 500 Y Free. Murphy earned a runner-up finish with a time of 5:30.92 to secure a 1-2 finish for Illinois State.
Snow picked up her second event win of the day with a victory in the 100 Y Fly with a mark of 56.43, as Turken tallied a runner-up finish with a time of 59.13.

NORMAL, Ill. – Quincy University women’s swimming went on the road Friday afternoon to take on Division I opponent Illinois State at Horton Pool in Normal, Illinois. The Hawks battled throughout the meet but ultimately fell by a score of 180-82.
Despite the team’s result, QU picked up two event victories. Ellie Benjamin won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:21.42, leading a 1-2-3 sweep for the Hawks with Chantal Tiesinga and Shelby Smith finishing close behind. Quincy also captured the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the quartet of Bella Sparrow, Vanja Vrbanec, Lise Puissant, and Ariaa Sheth posted a winning time of 1:44.41.
The Hawks collected several additional standout performances against the Redbirds. Tiesinga (11:25.90) and Sheth (11:30.01) finished third and fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle, while Puissant claimed third place in the 500 free (5:36.13). Faith Cummings was strong in the breaststroke events, taking third in the 100 (1:08.63) and second in the 200 (2:32.53). In the backstroke, Olga Pucarevic (1:02.53) and Lise Puissant (1:03.58) secured fourth and fifth in the 100, while freshman Laiken Vorthmann earned a fourth-place finish in the 200 back (2:15.60).
On the sprint side, Angelina Pagliaccio (26.78) and Vrbanec (26.95) scored points in the 50 free, and Pucarevic (56.65), alongside Sheth (56.81), notched top-five finishes in the 100 free. Pucarevic added a third-place swim in the 100 butterfly (1:00.83), with Vrbanec contributing a fifth-place effort in the same race.
Quincy showed depth across multiple events despite the strong challenge from Illinois State. With contributions from both veterans and newcomers, the Hawks earned valuable experience early in the season against a Division I foe.
The Hawks will return to action on October 17, traveling to Davenport, Iowa, for a dual meet with St. Ambrose University beginning at 6:00 PM.
