Olympic champion Hubi Kos had a fantastic showing at the World Cup this fall, winning the overall men’s title and breaking world records in the 100 and 200 back. However, Kos had to stop racing at some point and put in base work, which is exactly what Bob Bowman had on the menu for the Hungarian in November.
Coming off of a 24-day altitude training camp that saw the Texas pro group swimming 10 LCM practices per week, Kos performed well again at the US Open. In Austin, Kos swept the 100-200 backstroke and 200 IM as well as placed 3rd in the 50 back and 200 fly and 5th in the 100 fly.

Bob’s group is on fire, almost unbelievable.
Totally unrelated to the article (sorry) but y’all know how we were speculating last week about MA moving from ASU because he hadn’t been in Tempe, Herbie didn’t post about him at the US Open, and he posted pics of himself moving?
His insta story for the past 24 hours shows him taking flights with the caption “time for the next adventure” and then him landing in an airport near a “Hawaiian Airlines” sign. His dad moved to Hawaii to train age groupers, right? I wonder if Michael is going back to train with Peter full time (and assistant coach the kids) 😳
I hope he’s going back to USRPT. It may not work for everyone, but it worked for him.
Until it did not
I take it Hubi’s not taking classes this fall?
Nope unenrolled for fall! Should be back in spring based on someone else’s interview though
It is dumb that any 200M races are on the same day of the Olympic schedule. The WC schedule was so mean. It was preventing good swimmers from doing their own stroke race and the 200IM.
In any case, he shouldn’t swim the 200IM if it is the same day as the 200 backstroke. Hubi, we want you to try to break the Supersuit record. Focus on that! I know, I know, medals are forever and records get broken. But that is a SUPERSUIT RECORD. We need that one broken. Pretty please?
Half supersuit record as Peirsol wore the Arena leggings, and the greatness of Peirsol as a backstroker is undeniable.
I remember that race. Lochte was actually ahead through 125-130 meters, but couldn’t maintain that speed the rest of the way. I don’t have the splits in front of me, but I believe Peirsol was 28 mids on the last 2 50s, which is significantly faster than anyone else has ever been. I don’t think anyone else has ever split 28s on the last 2 50s. Maybe Lochte in 2011 when he went 1:52.8.
Lochte was 28.8/28.9 in 2011. Peirsol was 28.4/28.6 in that wr swim. The fastest back half ever actually belongs to Irie from that same race in 2009, where he came back 29.0/27.8
I don’t deny Peirsol’s great backstroking ability. But those leggings allowed him to maintain that fast speed through the final 50, which as pointed out above, no one else can do without those. Which is why I want that record broken.
This guy will have a great and long swimming career.
All the Texas swimmers have the same feelings about that training camp…it was hell lol.
I’m sure it’s the type of hard work that gets him to Peirsol’s 200 back WR.
It wont. That record will be there a while.
