CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State swept the Cleveland City Classic on Saturday against Baldwin Wallace and John Carroll.

The Green and White beat BW 202-39 and JCU 185-49.

Haley Palmer claimed multiple wins on the day: 50-yard freestyle (24.82) and 100-yard freestyle (54.46).

Gracie Chelf took home two wins on the afternoon: the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.77) and the 100-yard backstroke (58.40).

Cleveland State started the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay as Audrey ButcherElla Ciez, Palmer, and Gra. Chelf finished in 1:45.74.

The distance events were won by Isabella Caraballo in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:39.73 and Gretchen Chelf in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:14.43.

Butcher finished in 2:11.26 to win the 200-yard IM.

The 200-yard freestyle relay went to the Vikings as Gra. Chelf, Palmer, Butcher, and Oksana Horova finished in 1:36.55.

The 100-yard breaststroke saw Horova put up a winning time of 1:08.64.

In diving, Lorelai Maisano won the three-meter with a score of 291.85.

The day ended with Rosie WhittenAlaina Brown, Gre. Chelf, and Hannah Panko won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:39.65.

Cleveland State completes the regular season on Friday, January 30, against Oakland with a 4 p.m. start.

Landon Harman led the way with multiple wins on the day: the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.82) and 500-yard freestyle (4:46.79).

Cleveland State started the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay as Jaden DavillierTyler SchultzeJustin Schneider, and Joe Parkhurst finished in 1:32.82.

Brock Wallace won the 1000-yard freestyle knockout competition with a time of 9:47.97.

Ahmad Abdalhak claimed the 200-yard IM after touching in 1:54.87.

Alex Cucu and Parkhurst tied for first place in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 21.48.

Seth Smith was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly after touching in 51.73, and Schneider claimed the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.47.

The 100-yard breaststroke went to Gorkem Sulun with a time of 57.45.

Paxton Martinez won 3-meter diving with a score of 272.70.

The day ended with Hudgens, Seth SmithDaniel Lyngaas, and Jacopo Lanzo winning the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:08.49.

Cleveland State completes the regular season on Friday, January 30, against Oakland with a 4 p.m. start.

CLEVELAND – On a chilly Saturday in Cleveland, a trio of Northeast Ohio squads traveled to Busbey Natatorium for the 2026 Cleveland Classic.

Swimming against Baldwin Wallace and host Cleveland State, John Carroll Women’s Swimming & Diving enjoyed nice results.

The Blue Streaks fired past the Yellow Jackets, 167-70, while dropping to the Vikings, 185-49.

Results

The day began with a silver finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Audrey SevaldOlivia GoodmanGabrielle Adamczyk, and Mairin Dalziel combined for second place in the event with a time of 1:50.20.

Individually, Sevald excelled, beginning with the 200 Free. The Akron native cooked up a time of 2:00.24 for third. Bree Shirkey followed closely behind in fourth. Later on, Sevald scored second in the 100 Backstroke, as the Akron native clocked in at 58.88.

Adamczyk thrived for John Carroll, beginning with her brightest highlight in the 100 Butterfly. The Buffalo native soared for a victory with a time of 58.49 in impressive fashion.

In the sprints, JCU notched some solid times. Dalziel snagged fifth in the 50 Free with a mark of 25.28, followed by Taylor Hudson in sixth at 25.54. Hudson carded third in the 100 Free, clocking in at 57.14.

In the lengthier events, Ella Muzychak provided the top highlight in the 500 Free. She tabbed fourth with a mark of 5:30.72.

Kami Contakis and Hilty enjoyed a solid race in the 100 Breaststroke. The pair went fourth and fifth, led by Contakis’ time of 1:12.49.

In the relays, JCU tabbed a pair of strong efforts, primarily in the 400 Free Relay to end the day. Dalziel, Adamczyk, Alyssa Galley, and Shirkey combined for a second-place time of 3:43.16. In the 200 Free Relay, JCU’s quartet of Shirkey, Dalziel, JJ Gowetski, and Kaitlyn Hilty worked together for fourth at 1:41.40.

Competing against Baldwin Wallace and host Cleveland State, John Carroll Men’s Swimming & Diving posted nice results, most especially in the relays.

The Blue Streaks rolled past the Yellow Jackets, 186-44, while falling to the Vikings, 163-72.

Results

To lead off the day, JCU snagged a silver finish in the 200 Medley Relay. David MillerBart KubisDom Falcon, and Owen Holm worked together well. The JCU quartet combined for a time of 1:33.33.

The Blue Streaks conquered the competition in the 200 Free Relay in impressive fashion. Patrick Branch, Holm, Falcon, and Cameron Cook killed it, working in unison for a strong time of 1:25.56. Cook’s split especially stood out.

Later in the 400 Free Relay, JCU fired up a third place time of 3:14.23. Branch, Jacob Florio, Gallagher, and Holm formed the dynamic quartet.

Cameron Cook hinted at excellence later in the relays with fantastic work individually. Notably, the Virginian flew through the water in the 100 Free, crowning himself the champion in the event. Cook touched the wall in 46.79.

Sam Kmet shined brightly on the distance side of things. The Richfield native carded a second-place effort in the 1000 Free, outlasting the competition with a mark of 10:04.32. To follow it up, the Firestone grad turned in a time of 4:52.94, good for fourth.

The 100 Breaststroke yielded a dynamic result for the team. Bart Kubis directed the JCU effort, as the Park Ridge, Illinois native guided the way with a silver time of 57.73. Hofmann followed in third, while Alex Gallagher tabbed fourth.

Joe Nadur did his usual strong work on the IM side of things. The senior scored a time of 1:54.98 for second. In the 200 Free, Branch picked up a top-three finish, clocking in at 1:45.58.

Miller kept at it in the 100 Backstroke in the continuation of a nice weekend. The Decatur, Illinois native touched the wall second in the event in 51.48. Logan Snively followed him in third at 52.71. In the 50 Free, a pair of Blue Streaks finished back to back, too. Falcon and Hofmann took fifth and sixth with times of 22.34 and 22.36.

Michael Vertikoff impressed in the 100 Butterfly. The Hilliard Davidson grad snatched second in the event, clocking in at 52.04.

CLEVELAND – The Baldwin Wallace University women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up the regular season as it fell in a pair of non-conference meets at the Cleveland City Classic hosted by NCAA Division I Cleveland State University inside the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

BW (7-4) fell to Cleveland State by a final score of 202-39 and to crosstown rival John Carroll University by a final score of 167-70.

Individuals

  • Freshman Eden Stahlin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), who is this week’s Ohio Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week) placed fifth in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:49.08 and was eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:52.37
  • Sophomore All-OAC stroker Brooke Radcliff (North Canton/Hoover) placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:17.18 and was ninth in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:04.86
  • Junior stroker Abby Marquardt (Pickerington/Central) finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:13.58
  • Sophomore All-OAC freestyler Amelia Wands (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) finished sixth in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 58.32 and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.90
  • Senior Academic All-OAC freestyler Ariel Lisy (Strongsville) finished ninth in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:14.07
  • Senior All-OAC stroker Mallory Upcraft (Oswego, N.Y.) finished 10th in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:06.01
  • Junior Academic All-OAC stroker Ashley Slife (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) finished 10th in the 100-yard backstroke and was 11th in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:06.62

Diving

  • Sophomore All-OAC Makenna Mincey (Brunswick/Magnificat) placed third in the 1-meter with 263.75 points.
  • Sophomore All-OAC Emmalie Mitzel (Massillon/Jackson) took fourth in the 1-meter with 238.00 points

Relays

  • The 200-yard medley squad of RadcliffMarquardtUpcraft and Wands finished sixth in a time of 1:59.69
  • The 200-yard freestyle team of Wands, freshman stroker Sydney Harbour (North Canton/GlenOak), Upcraft and Radcliff finished sixth in a time of 1:47.93
  • The 400-yard freestyle unit of SlifeStahlinMarquardt and sophomore freestyler Annalise Bolton (Berea/Berea-Midpark) finished sixth in a time of 4:11.41

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, February 18 when they travel to Akron for the first night of the OAC Championships hosted by the University of Mount Union inside the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron at 7:45 p.m.

CLEVELAND – The Baldwin Wallace University men’s swimming and diving team closed out the regular season as it dropped a pair of non-conference meets at the Cleveland City Classic hosted by NCAA Division I Cleveland State University inside the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

BW (4-7) fell to Cleveland State by a final score of 201-37 and to crosstown rival John Carroll University by a final score of 186-44.

Individuals

  • Junior stroker Michael Gruber III (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) finished seventh in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 4:53.81
  • Sophomore stroker Danny Murphy (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) finished eighth in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 56.05 and was ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:05.54
  • Sophomore freestyler Mason Carnahan (Willard) finished ninth in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle in times of 1:57.46 and 5:25.45, respectively.
  • Senior stroker Nolan Szuch (Springboro) finished ninth in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 58.07
  • Freshman stroker Aidan Bacon (Upper Sandusky) finished ninth in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:19.58
  • Senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference freestyler Kevin Meyer (Mentor) finished 10th in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle in times of 24.48 and 52.82, respectively.

Diving

  • Freshman Malcolm Thompson (Pittsburg, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was the runner-up in the 3-meter with 261.20 points

Relays

  • The 200-yard freestyle squad of freshman freestyler Xavier Hatfield (North Royalton), Thompson, junior freestyler Alex Cooper (Columbus/Thomas Worthington) and Bacon finished eighth in a time 1:54.40
