Holy Cross Women, Maine Men Secure Narrow Wins In Senior Day Split At Wallace Pool

ORONO, Maine – The Holy Cross women’s swimming and diving team earned a victory for the second time this season defeating nonconference opponent Maine by a 159-141 score Saturday at the Stanley M. Wallace Pool.

The victory sends the Crusaders to 2-1 on the season while the Black Bears fall to 0-2. Holy Cross has started the season 2-1 in four of the last six seasons.

The Crusaders had a few top season long times during the meet. Freshman Ainsley Nalen produced two individual first place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.77) and a top season time of 59.53 in the 100-yard back while earning first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.67).

Junior Greta Walting had a pair of first place performances. Walting hit the wall first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.33) and had a top team time of 1:05.76 in the 100-yard breast. She was also part of the 200-yard freestyle relay first place team.

Senior Madalyn Piasecki set the new 2022-23 team best time of 1:00.16 in the 100-yard butterfly while sophomore Emmy Mazzacano recorded a 5:19.51 in the 500-yard freestyle which was a new low.

Holy Cross returns to the pool this weekend for the three day Harold Anderson Invitational at Rhode Island.

ORONO, Maine – The Holy Cross men’s swimming and diving program suffered a 156-142 loss to nonconference program Maine Saturday morning at the Stanley M. Wallace Pool.

Holy Cross falls to 1-2 with the loss while the Black Bears (1-0) pick up their first win of the season.

The Crusaders had a couple of top season performances in the pool during competition. Sophomore Rory Hess had a pair of first place finishes for their teams. Hess recorded took part in the butterfly events and turned in a 52.58 time in the 100-yard event and a 1:57.67 in the 200-yard event which was good enough for first.

Freshman Jack Sorenson placed second in the 200-yard free (1:45.61) which was a top performance of the season for Holy Cross. Newcomer Jack Greiner was first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:11.90), junior Charlie Nascimben brought home first place in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.77 and sophomore Patrick Walsh was second in the 100-yard backstroke (53.35). Walsh also finished first in the 500-yard free (4:56.39).

Holy Cross travels to Rhode Island this coming weekend for the three day Harold Anderson Invitational.

Orono, Maine — The University of Maine women’s swimming & diving team dropped a 159-141 decision to visiting Holy Cross on Senior Day at Wallace Pool.

The Black Bears swept the relay events while adding four individual trophies on the afternoon.

Isabelle Irani had the strong showing of the day, coming home victorious in both the 100 yard butterfly (58.55) and the 200 IM (2:14.40) events.

Mia Poirer was victorious in the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 5:17.77 while placing second in the 200 freestyle at 1:56.84. Haylie Calver won the 1-meter dive with a final score of 253.73.

Kayla Loughman posted a pair of runner-up finishes, coming home second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:06.84 before placing second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.70. Madison Edwards took second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.65) and added a third place showing in the 200 back at 2:12.33. Morgan Bui touched the wall second in the 200 breaststroke at 2:29.32 before a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke at 1:09.02.

Sloane Gardner (2nd, 200 butterfly, 2:16.52) and Ashley LeClaire (2nd, 1m dive, 240.40) each posted runner-up tallies.

Maine’s team of Edwards, Bui, Irani, and Loughman teamed up to take first in the 200 yard medley with a time of 1:49.74. Liz Stoelzel, Poirier, Alicia Littler, and Loughman captured gold in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall at 1:40.24.

Orono, Maine — The University of Maine men’s swimming & diving team defeated Holy Cross, 156-142, on Senior Day at Wallace Pool.

Liam Blair and Riley Clark led Maine with two wins each as the Black Bears combined for seven individual victories while sweeping the relay events.

Blair swept the backstroke events, touching the wall first in the 100 yard backstroke at 53.04 before taking gold in the 200 backstroke at 1:58.15.

Clark earned two victories on the diving boards as he took first place honors in the 1-meter event with a final score of 268.13. Clark tallied a winning score of 288.15 in the 3-meter event.

Finn Devers also posted an impressive day, winning the 200 freestyle with a final time of 1:45.21 before tallying a runner-up showing in the 100 freestyle at 48.69. Kevin Arpin also recorded a win and a second place showing. Arpin touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.37 and was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle at 22.10.

Cam Watelet posted three second place finishes in the 200 butterfly (2:00.43), 100 fly (52.71), and the 200 IM (2:02.22).

Thomas LaFrance (2nd, 1000 freestyle, 10:12.80), Nate Teerlinck (2nd, 100 breaststroke, 1:00.80), DJ Mulligan (2nd, 1m dive, 225.53) all were runners-up in their respective events.

Scott Klein posted a pair of bronze finishes, placing third in both the 200 freestyle (1:47.10), and the 500 freestyle (4:58.34).

The team of Blair, Teerlinck, Watelet, and Arpin came home first in the 200 yard medley relay with a winning time of 1:35.31. Devers, Blair, Kaden Kilger, and Arpin won the 200 freestyle relay at 1:26.43.
