Hayden Miller Drops Nearly 20 Seconds, Swims 8:48 800 at Des Moines Futures

The first night of comepetition in Des Moines, IA featured the women’s 800 free, men’s 1500 free, and both the men’s and women’s 800 free relays. 14-Year-Old Hayden Miller (Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club) dropped almost 20 seconds en route to winning the women’s 800 free. Miller clocked an 8:48.93, coming in way under her previous best of 9:08.10. With that swim, Miller is now qualified for Junior Nationals and the US Open, and is within a second of the US Nationals and 2020 Olympic Trials cuts.

Cache Valley Marlins’ Darwin Anderson, 17, won the men’s 1500 by over 10 seconds, finishing in 15:51.82. This was another huge time drop, as Anderson came into the meet with a personal best of 16:28.52, marking a 32 second drop. Anderson was consistent in his race, splitting high 1:03s and low 1:04s in the middle of the race, before roaring home with a 59.95 on the last 100.

Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club won the women’s 800 free relay in 8:30.19. Keilah Eckhart led the relay off in 2:08.14, marking a best time by 3.44 seconds for the 16-year-old. Next in was Hayden Miller (2:05.69), followed by Claire Dafoe (2:10.31), and Carson Kaufmann anchored in 2:06.05.

Austin Swim Club won the men’s 800 free relay in a tight race with Springfield YMCA Swim Team. Austin Swim Club held a lead after the first leg, where Brian Li split 1:56.38 compared to Springfield Y’s Adam Milling (1:58.58). Jaden Luo then expanded ASC’s lead, splitting 1:53.64 on the second leg, compared to Springfield Y’s Spencer Hohm (1:56.20). Springfield;s Matthew Knox bit into Austin’s lead, splitting 1:52.92 to Nicolo Velasquez’s 1:53.96. The Austin Swim Club anchor, Truman Armstrong, split 1:58.25, narrowly holding off Springfield’s Michael Kindel (1:55.07). Austin SwimClub won with a final time of 7:42.23 to Springfield Y’s 7:42.77.
