For the fifth consecutive year, the Hauppauge-Smithtown girls’ swimming and diving team went unbeaten.
The unblemished season was capped off at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association State Championships, where Hauppauge-Smithtown repeated as champion and won its third title in four years.
Hauppauge-Smithtown was led by sophomore twin sisters Julia and Sarah Lucca, who each won an individual event and were a part of two winning relay teams.
In the 200 medley relay, the Hauppauge-Smithtown team of J. Lucca (25.80), Ellie Esposito (29.67), S. Lucca (24.51) and Olivia Chiofolo (23.45) won in a time of 1:43.43.
The Hauppauge-Smithtown squad of J. Lucca (23.82), Chofolo (23.50), Avery Wilcox (24.51) and S. Lucca (22.89) 1:34.72 later won the 200 free relay in 1:34.72.
The 400 free relay was won by Pittsford’s team of Lexi Lombard (52.34), Lily Orlando (52.77), Molly Bennett (52.34) and Sarah Kunze (51.30) in a time of 3:28.75. S
S. Lucca was the champion in the 100 fly with a time of 54.72, while J. Lucca won the 100 back in a personal best time of 54.06.
The multi-event winners individually were Long Beach junior Vivienne Zangaro and Williamsville East senior Lauren Golden.
Committed to Georgia, Zangaro improved on a 2nd-place finish in the 200 free from last year, winning it this year in a time of 1:48.18. Zangaro later won the 500 free in a personal best time of 4:44.60.
Golden, who has committed to Colorado State, took big leaps from last year to win the sprint freestyle events.
Golden first won the 50 free in a personal best time of 23.21, improving on a 5th-place finish last year.
In the 100 free, Golden jumped from 13th last year to winning the event this year in a time of 51.29.
Other individual winners were:
- Long Beach sophomore Una Diaz won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 2:01.98.
- Manhasset Senior High School senior Victoria Wang won 1-meter diving with 526.30 points.
- Niskayuna senior Fayth Goodspeed swam a personal best time of 1:02.79 to win the 100 breast.
