The Grand Canyon swimming and diving program returned to its home pool and the win column Saturday when the women defeated WAC foe New Mexico State 159-141 and both squads recorded big wins against Arizona Christian and Ottawa.

The Lopes bounced back after tough dual meets at Arizona State and Arizona in the last week. On Saturday, the GCU men swam with tech suits while the Lopes women did not.

GCU’s impressive meet included a first- and second-place finishes from juniors Maria Chatzi and Maria Brunlehner in the 100-yard freestyle. Chatzi went 52.21 and Brunlehner followed closely at 52.38 seconds.

Brunlehner also took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.91.

On the men’s side, Lopes freshman Joe Stephenson won the 1,000 freestyle in 9 minutes, 36.97 seconds.

GCU’s Briana Rittenbach placed first in the 100 backstroke . The graduate student went 56.51.

Lopes sophomore Carter Dooling touched in at 1:52.55 in the 200 butterfly, although he is primarily a breaststroker.

GCU sophomore Mohamed Mohamady claimed first in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 45.48 seconds.

Fellow Lopes sophomore Jonathan Rom continued his impressive week with a strong time of 1:51.57 in the 200 backstroke.

GCU senior Raphaela Nakashima won her 200 breastroke by less than a second by going 2:21.35.

In the diving competition, Lopes freshman Lucinda Harrison placed third in the 3-meter event with a score 235.28 points.

Senior Reece Robles won the 3-meter event for GCU with a score of 324.23 points, along with senior teammate Isaac Poole winning the 1-meter event with 333 points.

GCU will return to Riverside, California, on Jan. 20 to face California Baptist and UC San Diego.

PHOENIX – NM State kicked off the new year with their final dual meet against a WAC opponent as they traveled to Arizona to face Grand Canyon at the FR Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon. Despite winning eight events, the Aggies dropped the dual meet, 159-141, to the Lopes.

The Aggies opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay as Thea MasselinkKodi WimanLindsay Puhalski and Kathryn Gyde combined to post a time of 1:45.95. This marks the second fastest in the 200 medley relay by an Aggie team this season.

The following two events belonged to the Aggies as Katie Rink recorded a time of 10:31.96 to take the top spot in the 1000 free while Naomi Slee secured a first-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.60.

Thea Masselink and Emily Dobbins then placed second and third, respectively, in the 100 back as Masselink posted a time of 56.63 while Dobbins reached the wall at 58.59.

NM State also landed one swimmer on the podium in the ensuing four events as Foteini Charitou logged a third-place finish in the 100 breast (1:07.73), Estel Galo finished second in the 200 fly (2:09.50), Emily Dobbins claimed silver in the 50 free (24.29) and Naomi Slee raced her way to a third-place finish in the 100 free (53.57).

Later, Thea Masselink and Lindsay Puhalski finished one-two in the 200 back with times of 2:02.78 and 2:05.72, respectively. Kodi Wiman also found success as she managed a second-place finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:21.73.

The 500 free was also a solid event for the Aggies as Naomi Slee secured her third podium finish with a time of 5:04.03 to finish first. Meanwhile, Katie Rink followed closely behind to tally a second-place finish – posting a time of 5:08.27.

Lindsay Puhalski then put together a pair of impressive swims in the 100 fly and the 200 IM as she placed second in the fly with a time of 57.78 before taking first in the individual medley (2:06.65).

The Aggies also secured the top spot in the final swim event of the day as Emily DobbinsNaomi SleeDreamer Kowatch and Katie Rink teamed up to post a time of 3:32.25 to win the 400 free relay.

NM State dominated the boards as freshman Mira Tinani finished first overall in both the 1-meter event and 3-meter event. She logged a score of 273.68 in the 1-meter before posting a finals score of 227.55 on the 3-meter board. Casey Schmidt also joined Tinani on the podium in the 3-meter dive – registering a score of 221.85.

UP NEXT
NM State will now prepare to host rival New Mexico on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the NM State Swim and Dive Complex. The meet featuring the Aggies and Lobos will begin at Noon while the program’s seniors will be recognized at 11:45 a.m.
