Germany’s Florian Wellbrock improves 27-year old national record

Florian Wellbrock was born in 1997, at this time, German swimmer Jörg Hoffmann already held the German National Record in the 1500m freestyle for six years and 21 more followed until Wellbrock bettered the record today.

He was clocked at 14:40,69 and improved Hoffmann’s record by more than 9 seconds. Florian Wellbrock also set a new 2018 world best time.

Wellbrock already is qualified for the 2018 European Championships in the 1500m freestyle and the 400m freestyle.

On the women’s side, Sarah Köhler set a new German National Record in the 1500m free yesterday. The German long distance swimmers are at the moment clear medal candidates for the European Championships.

Wellbrock dominated the race from start to finish und won with a ten-second lead ahead of Ukraine’s Mykhailo Romanchuk.

The European record is held by 2016 Olympic Champion Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA) in 14:34,04.

I look at his record and his best time before today was 14:55.49.
15 second improvement.

There were two WL swims for 2018 today.

Sjostrom 56.35
Rapsys 1.45.12

Both take the WL by 0.03 from Ikee and Sun Yang.
