Georgia Tech Announces Spring Signees, Including 2012 Chinese Olympian Iris Wang

Georgia Tech recently published a press release announcing their signing class for the 2015-2016 season. Among the new signees was Chinese Olympian, Iris Wang.

Wang was a member of the Chinese women’s 4×100 freestyle relay that just missed the podium in the Olympic final, finishing fourth. Wang split 54.03 on that relay.

With best times of 25.95 in the 50 LCM free, 55.18 in the 100 LCM free, and 2:00.91 in the 200 LCM free, she will be a valuable addition for the Yellow Jackets.

For reference, those times roughly convert to 22.65 (50 free), 48.27 (100 free) and 1:46.04 (200 free) in short course. That 100 free, in particular, would have been 11th at this past year’s NCAA Championships.

“Iris will be a game changer and catalyst for our women’s team. Her current times will make her presence known immediately at the ACC and NCAA level.”  – Coach Courtney Shealy Hart

Georgia Tech swimming & diving head coach Courtney Shealy Hart will welcome six additional student-athletes for the 2015-16 season. These six were inked during the spring signing period and join the seven that signed in the fall. The overall class is highlighted by Iris Wang, who was an Olympian for China in 2012.

“Top to bottom, this is a very deep and talented class,” said Hart. “We addressed some needs in certain events, but more importantly, we’re continuing to attract high-quality student-athletes who excel both in the pool and in the classroom.”

The spring signees include: Lila Best (Atlanta/Riverwood International Charter School), Kayla Williams (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee HS), Haibing “Iris” Wang (Xiamen, China/Shenzhen Huaqiaocheng HS), Auburn transfer Alex Goerzen (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School), Sara Gilbert (Atlanta/St. Pius X) and Megan Hansen (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood HS).

These six join seven that signed with Georgia Tech in December.
