Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics and New York native Jonathan Packles has verbally committed to Duke University as a member of the Blue Devils’ 2027 male recruiting class.
I am honored to announce my commitment to continue both my academic and athletic career at Duke University. To my mom, dad, brother, two sisters and entire family, thank you for always believing in and supporting me. To all of my teammates on AGUA, thank you for challenging and pushing me everyday to my limits. To Coach David, Coach Diana, Coach John, and Coach Hailey, thank you so much for guiding and helping me grow not only as an athlete but as a person. To everyone at Columbia Prep and Park East, thank you for providing me an outstanding educational foundation. Packles closed out his 2025 summer campaign with a positive showing at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in Greensboro (LCM). His top finish came in the 200 backstroke, where he finished 7th in 2:04.67. He also added a pair of best times in the other backstroke events, finishing 12th in the 50 back (26.85) and 8th in the 100 back (56.88).
One of Packles’ best short course showings came at the Speedo Sections in Ithaca this past spring. There, he notched SCY lifetime bests in the 100 back (49.79), 200 back (1:47.47), 100 butterfly (55.38), and 400 IM (4:01.12).
Packles’ skillset goes beyond just backstroke; he also holds a very respectable personal best times in the 500 freestyle (4:44.00) and 200 IM (1:57.08) as well,both of which came in December at the NCAP Invitational.
Best Times SCY:
- 100 Back: 49.79
- 200 Back: 1:47.47
- 200 IM: 1:57.08
- 400 IM: 4:01.12
- 200 Free: 1:49.65
- 500 Free: 4:44.00
The Blue Devil men finished 12th at the 2025 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships.
Based on Packles’ best times, he would have finished 44th in both the 100 back and 200 back, and 42nd in the 400 IM.
Backstroke is his clear specialty, and he’s got some potential in the 400 IM and mid-distance free events.
Packles is the Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics Open record holder in both the 100 (56.88) and 200 backstroke (2:03.41) in long course.
Packles is the first publicized commitment for Duke in the men’s high school class of 2027.
