Fordham Secures Sweep of Iona As Women Improve To 7-0

New Rochelle, N.Y. – (January 24, 2024) – For the sixth time this season, the Fordham swimming & diving team posted a dual meet sweep, winning both meets over the Iona Gaels on Wednesday at the Hynes Center Pool.

The Fordham women stayed undefeated with a 7-0 record, topping Iona, 222-74, while the Fordham men improved to 6-1 on the season with a 162-126 victory over the Gaels.

The Rams started and finished the meet with relay wins in both the men’s and women’s competition.  First in the 200 medley relay, it was Jane BrownAinhoa MartinManon Compagner, and Alison Lin taking first in 1:45.56, while the men’s group of Christian TaylorDavid TopiVitalis Onu, and Alex Shah grabbed first in 1:32.86.

The final relay was the 400 freestyle relay with Leire Martin, Lin, Madeline Bergin, and Compagner finishing first in 3:33.09, while Shah, Alex WilhelmNoah Althoff, and Wojciech Dutkowiak won the men’s event in 3:05.76.

Individually, seven different Rams won two events on Wednesday.  L. Martin won the 200 freestyle event in 1:54.89, as well as the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.38 to start things for the women.  J. Brown grabbed the top spot in both backstroke events in 57.50 seconds (100) and 2:07.47 (200), while A. Martin won the 200 butterfly (2:03.73) and 200 individual medley (2:01.53) events.  Wrapping up the multi-event winners were Emma Shaughnessy in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.40) and 500 freestyle (5:17.68) and Jessica Zebrowski in the 50 freestyle (24.06) and 100 butterfly (56.52).

Other event wins for the Fordham women came from Mya Bokerman in the one-meter dive (271.05), Compagner in the 100 freestyle (53.22), and Cai Flowers in the three-meter dive (261.08).

On the men’s side, Guy Gropper and Daniel Langlois were both multi-event winners.  Gropper posted the top time in the 50 freestyle (20.57) and 100 butterfly (51.13), while Langlois did so in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.65) and 200 individual medley (1:56.50).

Additional event wins came from Topi in the 100 breaststroke (58.22) and Wilhelm in the 100 freestyle (46.94)

The Rams will next be in action on Saturday, February 3rd, when Fordham hosts Massachusetts for a 1:00 PM meet at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center for both Senior Day and Alumni Day.

In their second dual meet in a span of five days, the Iona University Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Team dropped a pair of dual meets to the visiting Rams of Fordham.
 
The Iona women fell to 2-7 on the season as they were outscored 222-74. The Iona men go to 4-4 on the season after a tight 162-126 meet that saw the Gaels close to within 8 points only to fall back over the last three events.
 
The Iona women picked one first place win with sophomore Katherine Sarnes continuing her strong second half swimming, taking the1000-yard Free at 10:52.57, leading a 1-2-3 effort with teammates Tristan Urso (10:55.49) and Kate Kennedy (10:59.92) closing strong. However, the visitors went on a run, taking the next 13 events, with Ashley BenkertMegan Josephs and Isabelle Nicholson taking silver spots in the 100-Butterfly, 100-Free and 50-Free, respectively at 58.80, 54.39 and 24.74. 
 
A bright spot for the Iona Women was the home debut of freshmen diver Emma Todd, who competed on the 1-Meter Springboard for the first time this year. Todd sustained a foot injury in practice in October and had a lengthy rehab that yielded fourth place points today. 
 
The Iona men battled in every race and once again saw Senior co-captain Michael Faughnan take three golds, including back-to-back efforts in the 1000-Free and the 200-Free with times of 9:46.48 and 1:40.44, respectively. Faughnan also won the 500-Free at 4:43.86. 
 
Freshman Kieran Egan took both the 100 and 200 Backstroke events with times of 50.47 and 1:51.12, respectively. Classmate Noah Giunta came from behind to win the 200-Butterfly at 1:56.10.
 
On the diving board, Sophomore Dylan Riccio, continues to demonstrate improvement with taking wins in both the 1-Meter event (242.33) and a season best on the 3-Meter board at 250.95.
 
“We demonstrated strong aggressiveness today in our races and that is something we have to do as we continue to prepare for our MAAC Championships next month, “commented Head Coach Nick Cavataro.
 
Iona returns to the pool Saturday for the final dual meet of the season and the Senior Day (12:45pm) Ceremony followed by Manhattan at 1:00pm.
