Fly/Backstroker Sanjay Wijesekera Joins NYU’s Incoming Class

The New York University Violets added a man to their recruiting class as Sanjay Wijesekera signed on to join NYU next fall. Wijesekera is a butterfly/backstroker from Potomac, Maryland. He trains club with the Rockville Montgomery Swim Club and competed for Winston Churchill High School.

On his commitment:

“I will be heading to NYU next fall because the team and Trevor are super ambitious and hungry for success and I want to be a part of that. On top of that, NYU’s Stern School of Business will offer me the chance to chase after my passion with an unbelievable support system to help me achieve my future goals.”

Wijesekera’s Top Times:

  • 100 Y Fly- 50.75
  • 200 Y Fly- 1:53.67
  • 100 Y Back- 51.66
  • 200 Y Back- 1:51.89

Last season, the NYU men finished with a 7-1 dual meet record. Their only loss came at the hands of MIT on the road in their tri-meet against Williams College. The Violets placed 2nd at the University Athletic Association Conference Championships and then went on to place 6th at the Division 3 NCAA Championships.

Wijesekera should have an immediate impact for the Violets at the conference level, as his lifetime best in the 100 fly, 100 back, 200 fly, and 200 back are fast enough to have placed in the B final at last season’s UAA meet. In the 100s, he’s just a few tenths away from what it took to make the A final in 2018.
