Fish Out of Water: The SwimSwam Podcast, Episode 6: ISL Debrief

The latest episode of Fish Out of Water, the SwimSwam Podcast, takes on a little bit of a different format than prior episodes. Instead of interviewing an elite swimmer or coach, host John Culhane and SwimSwam senior writer Torrey Hart took 15 minutes on Sunday to debrief from the International Swimming League’s grand finale this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If you haven’t yet heard (maybe you’ve been on that Dallas-Hong Kong flight for the last 17+ hours), Energy Standard used another come-from-behind skins performance to win their meet and finish the season undefeated and as champions.

Torrey was on site at the finale, talking to fans and athletes to get their takes, and she and John discuss the league and its finale and what this all means.

Watching on ESPN2 now. First I’ve watched any of it. Not sure what it’s like live or streaming, but this version is virtually impossible to watch. No context. No times. No athlete identification. Only portions of most races. Fluff pieces. Stupid sounding announcers. I feel like I’m watching Ninja Warriors, American Gladiators or Battle of the Sexes/Superstars.

This is awful.

Yeah-it’s only the highlights in 35 minutes covering the 4+hours of the meet. I watched this earlier today and realized I could just be watching the races on Instagram/Youtube because those highlights are basically just those 10 videos stitched together

Gotta say, my imagination of what swimming could be as a sport has changed since watching the ISL Finale.
