FIJI Sending 6 Swimmers to the 2014 Commonwealth Games After 2010 Ban

After the entire country was barred from the 2010 Commonwealth Games on a suspension from the Commonwealth of Nations following a military coup in the country, Fiji has begun rolling out rosters for the 2014 event after they were allowed back in earlier this year on a limited basis.

The initial focus will be on Fiji”s famed rugby team, which is always among the Commonwealth favorites, but this also means that they’ll return to the swimming competition pool.

The 6 swimmers named for the Commonwealth Games team are below, and will be lead by coach Sharon Smith and manager Lucy Erasito:

  • William Clark
  • Meli Malani
  • Matelita Buadromo
  • Tieri Erasito
  • Caroline Puamau
  • Cheyenne Rova

This roster will include two of the three Fiji swimmers who raced at the 2013 World Championships: Matelita Buadromo and Caroline Puamu. Buadromo was 39th in the women’s 200 free in 2:12.31 and 41st in the 200 IM in 2:27.56, while Puamu was 39th in the 50 back in 30.36 and 43rd in the 100 fly in 1:04.72. The country’s lone male representative at Worlds last year, Douglas Miller, isn’t on the Commonwealth Games squad.
