FGCU Wins Eight Events En Route To 126-91 Victory Over Bellarmine

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University swimming and diving picked up another dual meet win Saturday against Bellarmine, soaring past the Knights 126-91 at the Lee County/Aquatics Center.

“The team kept the energy and momentum going from last night into this morning,” acting head coach Aly Tetzloff said. “This early in the season, it’s great to just see the girls race and support each other. We’re looking forward to our mid-season meet where we will spend the next few weeks honing into our details.”

Head coach Dave Rollins provided an opportunity for coach Tetzloff to lead the team Saturday, so she can continue to develop and grow in her coaching career.

FGCU won eight of the 12 events. The Eagles swept the 400 yard medley relay and the 200 yard butterfly. FGCU also finished 1-2 in the 50-yard backstroke and the 50-yard freestyle.

History was also made Saturday as Jasmin Kroll recorded the sixth fastest 100-yard IM time in program history, securing the gold at 58.19. Libby Russum cracked the top 10 as well with 24.98 gold-medal performance in the 50 yard fly, the ninth fastest time school history.

Kroll’s times in the 50,100 and 200 free lead the ASUN Conference. In the 100 fly, Russum is fourth in the across the league.

FGCU started strong with the sweep of the 400 medley relay. Liv HettingerJenna Gwinn, Russum and Kroll paced the pool by seven seconds, touching the wall in 3:51.47.

In the 200 butterfly sweep, Cameron Kuriger took the gold at 2:08.41, Sarah Zoellner won silver with a 2:12.02 showing and Emma Bjoernholdt made the podium for bronze at 2:13.59.

Nadia Helm and Sophia Macaisa went 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle event. Helm won with a time of 24.71, and Macaisa’s 25.25 effort was good enough for second, winning silver by 0.11.

Macy Mullis and Alexis Mishler continued the onslaught with another 1-2 finish for the Eagles, finishing at 26.91 and 27.70, respectively.

FGCU returns to the pool Nov. 16-18 for the Magnus Cup in Cleveland, Ohio, hosted by Cleveland State.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Bellarmine University swimming competed Friday and Saturday at the FGCU Aquatics Complex.

Bellarmine’s women faced FGCU and Florida Atlantic on Friday and FGCU only on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Knights men swam against Florida Atlantic on the first day.

On the final day, Bellarmine’s women won four events against FGCU. Freshman Charlotte Tully captured two golds after placing first in the 200 backstroke (2:08.01) and the 400 IM (4:40.07).

Junior Alexandra Pierce was the top finisher in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.73). Seniors Emily KuprionGrace LoughLiz Stevenson and Megan McEwen placed first in the 400 freestyle relay.

Pierce was the runner-up in the 100 IM and 50 breaststroke, as was freshman Lilly Wolfe in the 200 freestyle, McEwen in the 50 butterfly and senior Caroline McMillin in the 400 IM.

On the first day facing FGCU and Florida Atlantic, Pierce placed third and Tully was fifth in the 200 IM. Pierce was also third in the 100 breaststroke, and Tully was fifth in the 100 backstroke.

On the men’s side against Florida Atlantic, sophomore Sam Jones was the runner-up in the 1000 freestyle, as was junior John Paul Metzner in the 100 butterfly.

Jones placed third in the 500 freestyle, as did sophomore Blake Whiteley in the 100 backstroke, junior Brandon Thomas in the 100 breaststroke and freshman Brady Campbell in the 1000 freestyle. Senior Keegan Henderson and sophomore Caleb Howard tied for third in the 50 freestyle.

Sophomore Cason Henderson placed in the top half of the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, taking fourth in both. Freshman Colin Jackson’s fourth in the 100 freestyle was in the upper tier, as was the fourth of Evan Jones in the 500 freestyle.

Bellarmine will host Valparaiso and Eastern Illinois on Saturday at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center.
