Fairfield Swim & Dive Announces 2017-18 Schedule

Fairfield University Head Coach Anthony Bruno has announced the 2017-2018 men’s and women’s swimming and diving schedules. The teams will host six home meets at the RecPlex Pool as a part of the winter slate.

The Stags will open the season at Boston College at the New England Catholic Invitational as they will have three sessions in two days; the first on October 13 and two more following on October 14. “This meet will give us the opportunity to see many different events for each of our student-athletes,” said Bruno. “With 18 new athletes joining the program, it’s important we get them in and racing early.”

The team will then return home to host an Alumni Meet on October 21 at the RecPlex Pool.

The next road meet of the season follows on October 27 as the Stags are set to face off against Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.

Fairfield begins MAAC competition on October 28 at 1pm when Monmouth visits the RecPlex Pool.  They then travel to take on Providence College in Rhode Island on November 4 before returning to compete against Fordham at home on November 10.  “I am excited to have Providence back on the schedule after many years off and to see this rivalry grow,” said Bruno.

The team returns to MAAC action when they visit Marist on November 18 before traveling to Long Island to compete in the ECAC Winter Championships on December 1-3.  “This will be our mid-season meet where we will see some high-level competition and get to really sharpen up on what the MAAC Championship events will be for many of our student athletes,” said Bruno.  “We will also be swimming in one of the best venues in the United States, The Nassau County Aquatic Center.”

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving team will take a break from competition in December as they train for the second half of the season.  The Stags will return to host two home meets against St. Peter’s on January 5 and St. Francis Brooklyn on January 12.

The team will then be on the road against Seton Hall on January 14.  “They are new to our schedule and a formidable opponent as the Seton Hall men were Big East Champions in 2017 and the women’s program is consistently at the top of the Big East,” said Bruno.  “This will be a good meet for us to finish off winter training and move into the second semester. This meet will prepare us for MAAC Championships as we’ll see a high level of competition on the boards and in the pool.”

The Stags’ men and women will face Iona on January 20 in New Rochelle, N.Y. and on January 21the women’s team will travel back to Connecticut to compete in a solo meet at Sacred Heart University.

The Stags’ senior day and last home meet will be held on January 31 when Fairfield hosts Manhattan at 5 p.m., and they will close out regular season at Wesleyan University on February 3 at 1 p.m.

“When I talked with the team about the schedule and season planning, everyone was excited at the prospect of racing against tougher competition,” said Bruno.  “Everything we do over the course of the year is geared towards positioning our athletes to be successful at the conference level. By adding a few travel meets, invitationals, and back-to-back meets on different weekends, it allows us to really simulate what it is going to be like in February, in Buffalo, for the MAAC Championships.”

The 2017-2018 MAAC Championships will be held, February 14-17 at the Burt Flickinger Center at Erie Community College in Buffalo, N.Y.
