2025 EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Following a reported illness two nights ago, world record holder Caspar Corbeau did not compete in the 50 breaststroke prelims this morning. His countrymate and rival Arno Kamminga also was a no-show for the event.

Corbeau came into Lublin as the top seed and the #1 swimmer in the world this year for the event. He had raced to a 25.52 lifetime best at the Westmont stop of the World Cup in October. Later on in the World Cup series, the Dutchman also blasted a new world record in the 200 breast and became a top five all-time performer in the 100.

He carried over this momentum to the beginning of the European Short Course Championships, topping the podium in the 100 breaststroke and earning a new national record in the prelims of the event.

On the third day of competition, the day of the 200 breast prelims and semis, Corbeau experienced an “upper respiratory illness”. He continued to swim, though, placing second in the 200 breast, about two seconds shy of his world record swim. Kamminga finished 8th in the event.

This morning, both gentlemen did not show up to the last breaststroke event. As teammates competing in similar events, they have likely been in close quarters since Corbeau’s reported illness.

At the time of publication, no other Dutch swimmers had no-showed their respective events this morning. Baltic stars Kotryna Teterevkova no-showed an event after success earlier in the meet, as did Hungary’s Panna Ugrai. However, the reasoning for their no shows are unknown.
