On Friday, the Duke Blue Devils swept the Davidson College Wildcats with the men winning 203 to 96 and the women winning every swimming event to score 237 points to Davidson’s 59. Both the men’s and women’s teams will move to 3-0 for the season.
Women’s Recap
The Duke women’s team won every event at the meet, sweeping the Davidson College team. They also finished top two in every event except the 200 freestyle relay, where the “A’ relay was disqualified and the ‘B’ relay team of Tierney Lenahan (23.60), Clare Logan (23.41), Kate Meyers-Labenz (23.46), Claire McLean (23.87) touched in 1:34.34
They started the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay with the team of Ali Pfaff (53.54), Kaelyn Gridley (1:00.71), Martina Peroni (54.67), and Tatum Wall (49.92). They touched in 3:38.84 to beat their ‘B’ team’s time of 3:46.17 by nearly eight seconds.
Audrey Portello won three events for the Duke team, starting the individual events with a win in the 1000 free at 10:06.56. This was about six seconds faster than the 10:12.82 she swam at the first meet of the year last season.
She also won the 200 breast in 2:18.35, her 3rd fastest time in history. Her best in the event sits at 2:16.43 from June of 2021. Her final event win came in the 400 IM in 4:20.77, a second-and-a-half faster than the 4:22.24 she swam to open the season last year.
Duke also had a few two event winners. Heather White won the 100 free (50.69) and the 200 free (1:51.30). Martina Peroni swept the fly events, winning the 100 in 55.69 and the 200 in 2:01.41.
The other four individual events all had separate winners. Tierney Lenahan (100 back-54.15), Tatum Wall (50 free- 23.05), Ali Pfaff (200 back- 1:57.20), Neala Klein (500 free- 5:04.80)
The Blue Devils also won both diving events on the women’s side with Keira Lu. She won the 1-Meter in 323.78 and the 3-Meter in 348.38. Davidson diver Elle Jacobsen finished 2nd on the 1-Meter in 288.08, which was their highest individual event finish of the meet.
Men’s Recap
The Duke men won most of the events, but a few Davidson College swimmers took event wins over the course of the meet.
Both ‘A’ relays went to the Duke men’s team. The 400 medley relay swam 3:19.60 with Gus Koh (51.01), Jack Smith (54.84), Justin Wong (48.79), and Milo Shue (44.96). The 200 freestyle relay went to Shue (20.32), Owen Waibel (19.85), Alex Meyers-Labenz (20.11), and Wong (20.72) swimming 1:21.00.
Davidson won the first three individual events, so the first Blue Devil individual event win went to Jack Smith in the 100 breaststroke at 55.65, which was half-a-second faster than the 56.11 he swam the same weekend last season.
Duke went on to sweep the sprint free events with Milo Shue winning the 50 free in 20.45, which was exactly half-a-second faster than he opened last season, where he swam 20.95, and Colin Mikulecky swimming 45.88 in the 100. Mikulecky’s time was nearly two seconds faster than the 47.65 he swam at Duke’s first meet last year.
Cade Anderson (200 back- 1:50.17), Raphael Wang (200 breast- 2:01.12), Samir Elkassem (100 fly- 49.83), and Owen Markowitz (400 IM- 4:04.63) took Duke’s other individual event wins.
The Davidson men had a very strong showing against Duke, winning all the longer freestyle events, the 100 back, and the 200 fly.
They started the meet with a win in the 1000 free thanks to Henry Shoemaker swimming 9:33.13. He touched more than five seconds ahead of Owen Markowitz’s 9:38.42 for Duke. Shoemaker, a freshman, swam about 10 seconds faster than he did at the first meet of the season where he swam 9:43.07 against Queens at the end of September.
The 200 and 500 freestyle events both went to Dylan Felt. He swam the 200 in 1:38.52, which was a new season best time and was about a second faster than the 1:39.80 he swam the same weekend last season.
In the 500, he swam 4:32.84 to touch just over two tenths ahead of Anderson Kopp from Duke. His time was also about three seconds faster than the 4:35.68 from this weekend last season.
Liam McDonough won the 100 backstroke in 50.82, a season best by almost three seconds, and Fletcher Smith won the 200 fly in 1:51.24 as the other two event winners from Davidson.

Duke’s next met is this Friday vs North Carolina in their home pool, and Davidson will host George Mason for a two day meet on Friday and Saturday of this week.
