Division III SUNY Geneseo Women Top Canisius, Griff Men Win

The Canisius men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams earned a split on the road Saturday afternoon in Geneseo, N.Y. The Canisius men defeated Geneseo, 161-133, while the women’s team suffered a 169-131 loss.

In diving, Canisius senior Gianna Cornelia earned first and third-place in the 3-meter (244.05) and 1-meter (222.55) events, respectively. Senior Vinnie Costanzo took second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 223.75, while sophomore Adriana Bolender earn fourth in the 1-meter event (198.30).

On the women’s side, freshman Grace VanBuren earned three top scores, finishing first in the 100-yard butterfly, taking second-place in the 50-yard freestyle and earning first-place as a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team with Sage Pollack, Carolyn DeBoth and Ashlynn Gilfillan. Gilfillan also finished first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.85.

The men’s side earned first-place finishes in twelve of their 14 events Saturday afternoon. Seniors Kenyon Winkky and Kyle Kimerer swept each of their respective events. Winkky earned first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 100-yard backstroke, the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-medly relay.

Kimerer also took first-place honors in the 200-medley relay, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle and as a member of the 200-yard freestyle team.

In men’s diving, freshman Slade Merk finished third in both the 1-meter (114.30) and 3-meter (128.30) events.

The Blue and Gold return to action on Nov. 2, when the Griffs travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Colgate. Meet time at the Grace H. Lineberry Natatorium, is set for 1 p.m.

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior Lauren Siegel finished first in the 100 back, 200 back and 400 IM as the Knights defeated NCAA Division I Canisius, 169-131, on Saturday at Alumni Pool.

Siegel took first in the 100 back (1:00.64), finished fastest in the 200 back (2:09.88) and touched up first in the 400 IM (4:44.59). She also swam the opening leg of the Knights’ first-place 200 medley relay, cruising through 50 meters at a 28.47 split as the Knights finished in 1:49.88. First-year Lauren Sposili teamed with Siegel in the relay and added first-place finishes in the 1000 free (11:05.53), 500 free (5:27.69) and the 100 breast (1:08.67), the 10th-fastest time in program history. Junior Paige Turcotte earned victories in the 200 fly (2:14.35) and the 200 breast (2:30.59). Junior Deidra Osula took first in the 50 free with a time of 24.60 while first-year Chloe Willson won the 200 free with a time of 2:02.99.

Junior Alyssa Vadala took first place in the one-meter dive with a score of 228.50 as the Knights earned their second-consecutive victory over the Griffins.

Geneseo (2-0) will host Grove City on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1:00 p.m.

SUNY Geneseo senior Mitchell Phelps was one of three event-winners for the Knights, taking first in the 200 back, as Geneseo fell, 161-133, to NCAA Division I Canisius on Saturday at Alumni Pool.

Phelps placed first  in the 200 back with a time of 2:01.29 and added a second place finish in the 100 fly (55.24). Sophomore Sean McClellan added a first-place finish in the 400 IM, clocking in at 4:23.69. Sophomore Corey Wirth swept the diving events, placing first off the one-meter board with a 277.45 and the three-meter board, scoring 282.05.

Geneseo moves to 1-1 in dual meets this season and will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 9 when they host Grove City at 1:00 p.m.
