Division III Mary Washington Tops Howard Women, Bison Men Win 136-126

WASHINGTON (October 26, 2019) – Howard University men’s swim team opened its three-meet home stand with a narrow victory over Mary Washington, 136-126, inside the Burr Gymnasium Pool.

With the win, HU remains unbeaten on the young season (3-0).

Howard started and ended the afternoon with a pair of relay wins.

The 200 Medley relay squad of junior Kegan Ford (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) and freshmen T’lez Foulkes (Durham, N.C.), Miles Simon (Atlanta) and Arion Solomon (Fairburn, Ga.) took first overall, clocking in at 1:35.66.

Ford, Foulkes, Solomon and newcomer Mark-Anthony Beckles (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago) earned first place in the men’s 400 Free Relay with a 3:12.56 mark.

Individually, Beckles and third-year swimmer William Speakman Smith II (Jacksonville, Fla.) won two events apiece. Beckles won the men’s 50 Free (21.53) and 100 Butterfly (52.28) while the Florida native claimed victory in the 100 Breast (58.62) and 200 Breast (2:16.41).

Other noteworthy individual wins included Simon (200 Back; 1:58.97), and freshmen Kevin Claiborne (Queens, N.Y.; 100 Back; 55.59) and Luke-Kennedy Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas; 1000 Free; 10:07.28)

Howard University women’s swimming and diving team came up short against Mary Washington, 124-153, inside Burr Pool.

With the setback, HU suffered its first loss of the season (2-1).

HU capped off the afternoon with a victory in the women’s 200 Medley Relay (1:51.94), consisting of the team of sophomore Asha Evans (Atlanta) and freshmen Ileana Bocage (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago), Courtney Connolly (White Lake, Mich.) and Breyahna Tyme (Ontario, Canada).

Connolly and Tyme led the way in individual events. Connolly claimed the top spot in the women’s 200 Free (1:58.54) and 400 IM (4:45.53) while Tyme earned first place in the 100 Back (1:00.72) and 200 Back (2:13.03).

Other notable Bison victories included junior Christian Nickolas (Brentwood, Calif.; 1-meter dive; 253.40) and sophomore India Jackson (Philadelphia; 100 Breast; 1:09.53).

Friday (Nov. 1), the Bison continue their home stand against crosstown foe American. First race is set for 6 p.m. inside Burr Pool.

The University of Mary Washington women’s swimming team topped Howard University, 153-125, on Saturday in Washington D.C. The Eagles improve to 3-1 on the season.

Claudia Keller took the top time in the 1000 yard freestyle and also placed second in the 200 yard backstroke. Mary Zagrobelny placed first in the 200 yard breaststroke and then took second in the 100 yard breaststroke. Erin Whitesell took first in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:17.25, and also won the 100 yard butterfly as well.

Sydney Hall came in first in the 50 yard freestyle winning by .08, with a time of 25:04. Hall was also a winner in the 100 yard freestyle. Macey Lynch placed first in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:28.78.

The relay team of Grace Gartman, Lynch, Jenny Thompson, and Hall took the top time in the 400 yard freestyle.

The University of Mary Washington men’s swimming team fell to Howard University, 136-126, on Saturday in Washington D.C. The Eagles slip to 2-2 on the season.

Kolin Hoffman took the first win of the day as he won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.73. Hoffman also took first in the 500 yard freestyle as well. Bradley Torrington won the 200 yard butterfly and then placed third in the 100 yard butterfly.

Brian Harnish placed first in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.54. Noah Carpenter secured the last win of the day for UMW in the 400 yard IM.

UMW will be back in action on 11/2 as they will travel to Roanoke for a meet at 4 p.m.
