While 10-time Olympic medalist Caeleb Dressel was the headline name at the 2025 Florida Swimming Summer Senior Championships, another sprint freestyler stole the thunder on the final day of competition.
With no Dressel in the field in the 100 free, all eyes were on University of Florida rising sophomore Devin Dilger. He wound up winning the race in 48.91, which was a .71 second improvement over his previous best time from the summer before college. According to Michigan’s Swimming Legends, an organization dedicated to chronicling and celebrating the state’s swimmers, that swim is the fastest 100 meter freestyle by a Michigan native ever.
He surpassed the 49.18 done in 2017 by Cameron Craig and the 49.20 done by three-time U.S. Olympia Peter Vanderkaay.
The swim completed a breakthrough meet for Dilger that also swam him win the 50 free in 22.53, which is a best time by .09 seconds, and the 200 free in 1:50.45, which is a best time by 2.15 seconds.
At the SEC Championships, Dilger scored a point with a 24th place finish in the 50 free (19.91 after a 19.53 in prelims). He also finished 32nd in the 100 free (43.04) and 34th in the 100 fly (47.34). His long course bests so far are more impressive than his yards bests – and he didn’t go a best time in the 100 yard free in his first season with the Gators.
It is a common pattern at the University of Florida, known for its intense, high volume training, for swimmers to take a year to adapt, though, so these long course results could be a jumping-off point for a breakthrough sophomore season in the short course pool.
Dilger is not scheduled to swim at the USA Swimming Summer Championships that start on Tuesday in Irvine.

Congratulations to DD – Keep getting faster and stronger!
