Cornell Kicks Off 2022-23 Campaign With Sweep of Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. — Cornell women’s swim and dive took home a big 146-97 win over Binghamton to open the 2022-23 season at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center in Vestal, N.Y. The Big Red earned a multi-podium finish in nine different events on Friday evening.

Senior diver Elise Jendritz picked up right where she left off in the 2021-22 season, sweeping the top of the podium in the 1m and 3m dives. Her 1m dive smashed the current Cornell record by nearly 10 points when she earned a final score of 274.88. Her 3m dive was also good for one of the top-10 dives in Cornell history, earning fourth place in the record books at 276.08.

Returning senior Melissa Parker also returned in season form, earning first in the 100 yard Freestyle (52.78) and the 200 yard Freestyle (1:54.79), in addition to swimming the second leg of the 200 yard Freestyle relay team that placed first. Parker combined with juniors Priscilla Wongso and Joelle Ohr as well as freshman Emilie Boisrenoult to notch a time of 1:35.73.

Boisrenoult made plenty of waves in her first collegiate meet, placing first in the 100 yard Butterfly (56.27) and teaming up with Wongso to place 1 and 2 in the 50 yard Freestyle at 23.76 and 24.55, respectively.

Junior Aviva Muñoz and sophomore Sophia Tsai placed 1 and 2 in the 100 yard backstroke less than three tenths of a second apart (59.38, 59.61).

Sophomore Allie Danko and rookie Jungmin Yoon wrapped up 1 and 2 in the 500 yard Freestyle to help boost the Big Red over the top.

On the Horizon
Cornell returns to the waters tomorrow evening, Saturday, November 5, when the Big Red take on St. Bonaventure to close out opening weekend.

VESTAL, N.Y. — Cornell men’s swim and dive came home with at 128-115 win over Binghamton to open the 2022-23 season at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center in Vestal, N.Y. The Big Red earned a 1-2-3 finish in two events in the contest.

The first Big Red sweep came in the 200 Yard IM when sophomore Sebastian Wolff touched the wall at 1:53.10, followed closely by seniors Jack Valiquette at 1:54.55 and Jacob Bass at 1:55.34. The second 1-2-3 finish came in the 100 yard Backstroke. Junior Logan Holt secured first place with a time of 51.62, followed by senior Paige daCosta (51.78) and rookie Pietro Ubertalli (52.22).

The Big Red saw first place finishes in three other events. The 400 yard Medley Relay team, comprised of daCosta, Wolff, and sophomores Joeseph Gurski and Dominic Edwards opened the day with the first men’s podium finish with a time of 3:19.81.

The two other first place finishes come from Ubertalli in the 400 yard IM (4:02.04) and junior divers Matthew Warren and Gabe Hartman, who placed first and second in the 3m dive with final scores of 308.40 and 276.60, respectively. Warren’s 308.40 is good for sixth all-time in the Cornell record books.

On the Horizon
Cornell returns to the waters tomorrow evening, Saturday, November 5, when the Big Red take on St. Bonaventure to close out opening weekend.

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton swimming & diving teams hosted Cornell on Friday night at the Saunders Aquatic Center in their final home meet of the fall semester. The Big Red, however, swept both the men’s and women’s meets, winning by scores of 128-115 and 146-97 respectively.

On the men’s side, sophomore Elijah Lanfear was the lone double winner, capturing the 50 free (20.58) and the 100 fly (48.40). He has now won seven individual events in the past three meets.

Senior Ryan Cohn won the men’s one-meter diving competition with a score of 268.05 points. He has now won eight of the 10 events he has entered in so far this season.

Other winners on the men’s side included junior Liam Murphy in the 200 free (1:40.78), fellow junior Henry Shemet in the 100 free (46.46), freshman Liam Preston in the 500 free (4:34.68) and junior Eric Kroon in the 100 breast (56.07).

Murphy, Shemet and seniors Justin Meyn and Ryan Maierle won the 200 free relay (1:23.92).

On the women’s side, junior Courtney Moane won the 100 breast (1:05.59) and was on the first-place 400 medley relay team, which also included juniors Kandice Chandra and Maddie Hoover as well as freshman Maria Pignatelli. The Bearcat quartet clocked a time of 3:56.47. Moane has now won five individual events in her last three meets.

The Bearcats other individual winner in the women’s meet was freshman Celia Webster in the 400 IM (4:35.33).

Binghamton’s next meet is the Rhode Island Invitational, which takes place Nov. 18-20.
