The 2020 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Swimming Championships continued Saturday, February 22 at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce, Calif. with the 400-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke, and the 400-yard medley relay.
Through three days of action, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) leads the men’s field with 762 points, followed by Pomona-Pitzer with 741, Redlands with 430, California Lutheran with 424, Occidental with 276, Caltech with 242, Chapman with 188, Whittier with 158 and La Verne with 122.
CMS leads the women’s team standings with 831 points, followed by Pomona-Pitzer in second with 773 points, and Chapman in third with 367. Occidental is fourth with 335 points, followed by Redlands with 321, Whittier with 269, Cal Lutheran with 192.5, Caltech with 161, and La Verne with 143.5.
The men’s 400-yard IM saw Liam O’Shea of Pomona-Pitzer break his own meet record of 3:55.17 in the event with a time of 3:54.50. Teammate Jason Lu finished second in 3:56.37, while Ben Smith of CMS was third with a mark of 3:59.13.
The Athenas’ Augusta Lewis powered to a new meet and SCIAC record in the women’s 400-yard IM with a top time of 4:20.98, besting her own mark of 4:23.43 set a year ago. Teammate Natalie Larsen finished second in a time of 4:32.80, while Pomona-Pitzer’s Summer Will was third in a time of 4:33.24.
The Stags’ Marco Conati clocked a new meet record time of 48.30 in the men’s 100-yard butterfly, breaking his own record mark of 48.39 set last year. AJ Nybo of Cal Lutheran came in second in 48.79, while CMS’s Nathan Luis was third in 49.26.
CMS set another meet record in the women’s 100-yard butterfly as Ava Sealander lowered her mark of 55.54 to 55.38 in 2020 to win the event. Abby Smith and Allison Liu of the Sagehens placed second and third with respective times of 55.90 and 56.37.
The men’s 200-yard freestyle featured a top finish from Pomona-Pitzer’s Will Abele (1:38.93), while teammate Anzo DeGiulio placed second in a time of 1:39.50. Finishing third was CMS’s Anderson Breazeale who clocked a time of 1:40.33.
Narrowly missing the meet and SCIAC record in the women’s 200-yard freestyle was the Athenas’ Ella Blake won the event with a time of 1:52.30, while Pomona-Pitzer’s Haley Kirtland was second with a mark of 1:52.53. Natalia Orbach-Mandel of CMS came in third with a time of 1:52.61.
Kingsmen Luke Rodarte won the men’s 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 54.41, followed by Pomona-Pitzer’s Lukas Menkhoff (54.98), and CMS’s Walter Limm (55.77).
Julia Hagenbaumer of Redlands won the women’s 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.04, while Rachel Wander of CMS and Alexandra Gill of Pomona-Pitzer came in second and third with respective times of 1:04.19 and 1:04.23.
The men’s 100-yard backstroke featured a top finish from Chapman’s Will Crewe with his mark of 49.96. Breazeale followed in 49.97, while Stags’ teammate Dave Makhervaks was third with a time of 50.83.
Whittier’s Brooke Geske won the women’s 100-yard backstroke with a top time of 55.98 while Jamee Mitchum of the Athenas touched second in a time of 56.31. Isabel Swafford of Caltech came in third with a time of 56.56.
In the men’s 400-yard medley relay, the Pomona-Pitzer combination of O’Shea, Menkhoff, Abele and DeGuilio tied the meet record with a mark of 3:16.53, while Cal Lutheran’s quartet of Miles Gaitan, Rodarte, Nybo and Liam McCallum placed second with a time of 3:18.86. The CMS team of Breazeale, Limm, Conati, and Andreas Roeseler came in third with a time of 3:19.05.
The women’s 400-yard medley relay featured a new meet record from CMS’s Mitchum, Lewis, Sealander and Orbach-Mandel (3:45.87), while Pomona-Pitzer’s tandem of Liu, Gill, Smith and Kirtland came in second with a time of 3:48.11. Sydney Nakagawa, Hagenbaumer, Makenna Parenti, and Olivia Cano of Redlands finished third with a time of 3:54.07.
Action at the 2020 SCIAC Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships will conclude Sunday, February 23 with the 1650-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
