Jordan Wheeler, of Humble, Texas, has announced on Twitter her verbal commitment to the University of Texas Longhorns. Wheeler will travel 170 miles west to Austin from her hometown next fall, bringing with her a lot of potential in the long axis stroke events.

As a sophomore swimming for Atascocita High School, Wheeler went 23.64 to take fifth in the 50 free at the 2014 Texas High School 5A State Championships. She was also fourth in the 100 back and led off both Atascocita’s freestyle relays. Her best times over the last two seasons are:

  SCY LCM
50 free 22.85 26.38
100 free 51.09 59.31
50 back 26.86 30.03
100 back 55.37 1:04.07
200 back 2:06.87

Wheeler swims for Eagle Swim Association where she excels in long-axis stroke events. She was an “A” finalist in the 50 back at NCSA Long Course Championships in August, and a “B” finalist in the 50 free. Although not quite at the NCAA scoring level yet, Wheeler’s best 50 free, 100 free, and 100 back times would all qualify for the “A” finals at 2015 Big 12 Conference Championships. Furthermore, Wheeler would have a legitimate shot at making a couple of the Texas relays, making her a valuable asset from the get-go. Texas has a young sprint squad at the moment, having graduated four of their top five finishers in the individual event.

“I’m so excited to be committed to UT! When I got to UT on my official visit I absolutely loved it. I loved the campus, team, coaches, Austin, and everyone who worked at UT to make it the best college. I found myself constantly thinking about UT and knew it was the one for me because I couldn’t get it off my mind. I absolutely loved the girls, they made me feel apart of the team instantly while I was on my trip and even when I got home. I also admire the academics. I feel like UT is the perfect fit for me in helping me achieve my goals both academically and in the pool. I can’t wait to train with my fellow longhorn family under Carol and Roric, it will be a great four years. A quote I like is ‘the only difference between ordinary and extraordinary is a little extra.’ I think UT has a lot of ‘extra’ to help me go beyond what I think is even possible now.
